Jonas Vingegaard Rasmussen, the new alpha mutant

This is pretty rich from a guy who rides for a team directed by Mauro Gianetti and who's team leader is pretty much the number 1 overall mutant.

In terms of performance, Vincent Vittoz was top notch. The mens team pushed him out because (as I recall) they didn't appreciate his methods even though under him the mens team was a winning machine. Simon Fourcade is a nice guy but I don't get the impression he brings the same intensity as Vittoz.

I have said this before but a few years ago the French women's shooting was hit and miss (mostly miss) and now it is one of the strong points. The men who used to have excellent shooting have gone in the totally opposite direction. Sports is strange sometimes.

So far France has won all the medals they could have. Unfortunately I don't expect the men to keep up the streak, even with good skis. Top 4 is pretty incredible, but the French women are having a great season so it isn't that surprising.

It's amazing the difference in the level of shooting for the French women. Just a few years ago they were the squad that couldn't shoot straight - it was just a matter of who would fall apart and how badly. Braisaz Bouchet and Simon have matured into highly efficient biathlon machines and the...

I think we have our answer about Manificat, even if todays race wasn't the best judge he finished 6th of the French team. To his credit he finished ahead of Chanavat and I fully expect him to do so again tomorrow as well (irony intended).

In many ways it reminded me of a sprint stage in cycling, of which I rarely watch anything but the finish.

He's been selected for the Tour de Ski, but I agree on wondering what he expects other than languishing in 40th place. Just another athlete that doesn't know when to retire gracefully?

He finished 2nd to Manificat in the FESA cup (ex OPA) 10km classic race on Friday. Manificat is doing a "comeback" after a down year last year but I don't imagine he will be in the running for a result at the Tour de Ski.

I don't think that up to now Lapalus has been the most consistant, sometimes soon after exceptional performances he falls off the map. He did start very strong this year and is still getting good results, he is not a sprinter.

    Tadej Pogacar and Mauro Giannetti

So true, I can still remember Contadope and the chicken sprinting up the cols. There are some that find these performances exciting, my tendancy is to write off the tour for another year.

    Doping in XC skiing

Some might think of JT Boe and his stratospheric ski times, or Samuelsson who miralulously peaks for major competitions despite very ordinary results this year, but how about Rastorgujevs, convicted doper, who comes back after an 18 month suspension to finish 5th in the mass start despite 3...
