2024 Women's CQ Manager game

Page 5 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
I'm probably very late to the party in realising this, but the women's CQ scoring scale is rather different to the men's and gives much more weight to SSRs than to the big races.

I only noticed it with two of my riders getting wins this week. Kopecky won PR (1.WWT) and got 140 points while Drummond won Region Pays de la Loire Tour (1.2) and got 40!! Now if we translate those results to a men's race of the same level the scores would have been 280 vs 15. That's a massive difference in a points scoring ratio.

There must be some reason why they have it this way, but maybe it's something to bear in mind next year when selecting your team.

It would be easier if they used the same one for both genders. That said, there used to multiple races that were seen as big and important by the female riders, but they didn't necessarily have a high UCI status. With the expansion of the WWT, the death of some of the historically prestigious races, and more men's races getting women's equivalents, it probably also makes sense to revisit the rules soon.

I picked Drummond for my emerging riders game because I saw a huge chance for her to score 40 points in the Gravel and Tar race, but I had to wait a few months for her to get them somewhere else.

The .PRO level is very new for the women. For many years anything with a .1 was basically the biggest thing outside of World Cup races. In addition to this, a lot of the races given .WWT status were new or relatively new (or in Amstel Gold's case, rebooted) women's versions of men's races, whose longevity was still not certain because the WWT was brand new, while a lot of historic and traditional races were excluded and still attracted a stronger field than might be expected of a race of equivalent status on the men's side of he sport.

As a result, .1 and .2 statuses for women's races are a bit less immediately prescriptive than the men's equivalent, and CQ have probably tried to balance this out with a kind of median ranking for the level. This is also especially noticeable in the 18 months or so preceding an Olympics where historically a lot of 'pop-up' races would occur, hastily added races at a .1 or .2 level that would appear after the big teams had already et their calendar, usually incepted specifically with the aim of qualifying the host nation an athlete for the Olympics.

The three teams with Kopecky (DJSprtsch, Jon Ezeitza and Leadbelly) only had 2 other riders with more than 50 points in this update between them, so having the top scorer is no guarantee of success without backing her up with other picks.

Standings
Despite declaring above that he wouldn't have stepped up to second, Bminchow has jumped to the top of the table in this update: he has also become the first to have half the team in profit. Ruvu and Samu Cuenca both got top ten scores in this fortnight, but still couldn't hold their places. Rufs takes Amis Velo's top ten place, and enough of the cross riders are now riding that Otolomanolo moves off the bottom.

My riders for the weekend:

Ahtosalo
Andersen
Dideriksen
Fahlin
Koerner

Aintila and Gåskjenn are still going strong in Spain.

And here are for the week that just started:

Aintila
Gåskjenn

(Not that surprising that it's the same riders who did the Vuelta who are also doing Itzulia.
My guess is they're also doing Navarra.

Sorry: had hoped to do an update before the Giro got started, but they didn't make a download available, perhaps because the Vuelta had just started. So I began to prepare an update on the data released last Monday, but real life (and Giro game) intervened, and it was already late in the week before I was able to give it much time, so I thought I would wait until today's download. Which doesn't exist.

Just think of the tension that is building up though...

Not picking Vos has turned into a very unwise decision. None of us trusted Thalita de Jong to bounce back and be well on her way to the highest score of her career. And when we made our teams back in January, it looked like Cille's decision to start the season in Australia could lead her her to big a point haul, but that wasn't to be.

Then I and others were probably hoping that Cavalli could make a great comeback, but instead it's Muzic who's been allowed to shine. She has a chance to become the first FDJ rider to hit the 1000 points barrier. According to FDJ's Vuelta documentary, it wasn't initially the plan for her to ride all 3 GT-ish races this year, but now they are seriously considering it.

I watched the documentary hoping to learn more about why Cavalli left the race, but it didn't tell me much. It did leave the impression that it wasn't due to crashing herself, which is both good news and slightly worrying.

I'm very sorry to have left it so long, and at such a key section of the season.
If you're interested in the circumstances:
Mother in law in and out of hospital since early Feb, been in two different residential homes, and we've had 7 all nighters in A&E with her. Any day now will be transferred to palliative care: wife is in bits and one brother-in-law is as entirely devoid of empathy as the other is of ability to organise himself or speak to anyone in a non-abrasive way. Haven't really had time to look watch a bike race online or ride for months; Ride London Classique passes 200 metres from my home this afternoon but I can't see me getting to it. Games are a bit of a brain break from it, but rather too many at once at the moment, and the one week I had a bit of time, CQ didn't put up a downloadable spreadsheet.

8th April to 19th May
Cast your minds back: this update includes (from WWT) Amstel, Fleche, Bastogne-Liege, Vuelta, Itzulia and Burgos; 1.PRO events in Brabantse Pijl and Navarra Classic; plus a plethora of 1.1s

Standings
Considering how long it has been, there is actually very little change since last time, mainly because the top three up to early April have been the top three since early April, . And they are now well clear of the rest of the field. As Carlton Kirby would say, "There's your podium right there". Slow Climber is the highest placed to have changed position, and Salvarani, simultaneously having a leading place in the Giro game, is into the top ten.
