I remember during one of the running events in the Olympics, a runner was representing the Dominican Republic. He wasn't born there, only his parents. He was born in the United States. I was wondering as to how that can be.

Its called athlete for hire, most lesser countries accept pretty much anyone with a couple degrees of their nationality so they can have some representation.

Also, athletes in countries where they have no chance of getting on the official Olympic team and still want to be in the Olympics (knowing well they won't win) and have the requirements or connections with a country they can represent get on their teams.

yeah it's stupid. worse though are like all the american mlb players playign for israel in baseball they are like 5th or 6th generation americans though, same with greece
