'a peak' is just a highpoint (can be many), 'his peak' would commonly equate to 'best so far' or 'best ever' after retirement, similar to 'at >rider<'s peak'. Generally an athlete reaches a point at which physiological form + mental ability combined are at their most advantageous for a given sport, or 'their peak' in sporting parlance.

As suggested by an earlier poster however, you might wan't to discuss disambiguation in a more appropriate thread?
