Wiggins did the Giro 2010 as training which is completely different to targetting the Giro for the win.
All the guys i mentioned were fighting in the GC at the Giro and then went to the Tour.
Wiggins meanwhile took the Giro as a training ride finishing the mountain stages half an hour back.
If you take a race as a training ride then you are not actually hitting top form which means you can still build up slowly until you hit your peak once the tour comes along.
If you go for the Giro ftw however then you have to hit your top form in May and then rest a bit but not too much so that you can hit your top form again 5 weeks later.
But i wouldnt say the Giro was the reason for his poor performance at the Tour because riders who exerted themselves far more at the Giro and went for gc still outperformed him at the Tour, like Evans and vino.
The reason for that is a mystery, since the people Wiggins claimed to be feeling very good, and yet the people he was getting dropped by was just ridiculous,
