Don't forget to take out the gun suicides from your gun death numbers.
Why, don't they happen with guns.

OK, let me put it another way: the number of incidents of people using firearms for self-defense is highly exaggerated by the NRA and the gunfreaks, and people like you get suckered into believing it. Don't take my word for it, take Wayne LaPierre's.

"2.5 to 3 million times a year". Once every 13 seconds. Hmm. Now where d'ya suppose he got those numbers from?

Considering your first stab at it was wrong I expected something along these lines.

But thanks for your contribution.

I'm not backing the NRA. I'm interested in what the real number is and how it might be useful in the discussion to determine where we go from here.

So non NRA studies are just dismissed out of hand. Dismiss what the convicts say. You know better.

What I get is someone who is suicidal has many available methods. My guess is if there were a total gun bann it would not have an effect on the frequency of suicide. If you want to discuss gun violence, then you probably want to take those stats out.

The point was raised some ways back that suicide by gun is one of the easiest and most appealing methods. Less relative planning. And it's less visible I think to many in terms of its reality and the consequences. Less time to turn back. And the same is said to hold for violence towards others. Restriction is a deterrent.

This morning I saw a couple of studies that were closer to Velo's numbers. (And not in the usual clearly ideological venues--but you could probably sniff out their vested interests.

You don't think it is a lot easier to kill yourself with a gun than a baseball bat?
I am sure that easy access to a gun is more likely to increase the number of suicides, just as that same easy access causes a higher number of accidental shootings, especially among children. A home without guns is a safer home than one with guns, for sure.

This is stupid.

This conversation was about gun violence. If I'm committing an act of violence on myself (and only myself) then we should probably remove me from the gun violence discussion as it pertains to mass shootings and how to prevent them.

If you want to discuss ways of reducing suicide rates then feel free. I have no interest in that discussion.
