Default What's up with Campy?

I'm seeing ads for 2012 Pinarellos and Colnagos all equipped with Shimano.

I would have thought most buyers of an Italian brand bike would want Campy.

Why are they selling them with Shimano gruppos? Is it the US market that's demanding Shimano?

There are plenty of Colnagos and Pinarellos that come as complete bicycles with Campagnolo and even(shudder) sram. Couple of ads do not the market make.

Agreed, but a few years ago I didn't see most Italian brands equipped with anything but Campy. Now they're pushing their Shimano models - yes Campy's still available, but the ads aren't for those.

There are lots of moving parts to getting that photo and it could be that 2012 Shimano was what was available at the time of the shoot.

Also understand that Campy consumers are pretty much that way for life. At this point marketing to them isn't really a wise use of limited resources.

Maybe shimano made a deal with pinarello and colnago. In some industries it works like that. Pay and your products appear in the ad.

For me there will be no shimano on an Italalian bike. It's just wrong

Is that a bike manufactured jointly Italy and Australia? Anyway, on a serious note, I just don't understand the logic of your statement. Why is it "just wrong"? Please explain. Is it an argument that an Italian manufactured frame should use an Italian made groupset? You do know that many Colnagos are made by Giant and Pinarellos are also made in Asia? I presume you also know that Colnago manufactures in Romania.

Italian companies are famous for design rather than production. Most Italian companies focus on making their products gorgeous as well as funtional. From that point of view it makes sense.

Yep, I don't think a Merckx(Belgian when they were) should have anything but Campagnolo on it either. Kinda like putting Toyo tires on a Porsche..just isn't done.

I think you mean Campagnolo. That is indeed correct. High-end Mavic wheels are also made in Romania, as are Adidas, Solomon, etc., which are under the same umbrella corporation as Mavic.
