Pan American Games currently taking place in Canada
for athletes from North America, Central America, the
Caribbean and South America.

Track cycling started yesterday with the hosts winning
both the men's and women's team sprint and qualifying
slightly faster than the Sarah Hammer led USA women's
team pursuit foursome. Men's omnium is also underway.

Men's sprint qualifying held today:
1.Hugo Barrette (CAN) 9.978
2.Fabian Puerta (COL) 10.015
3.Hersony Canelon (COL) 10.041 EDIT: (VEN) not (COL)
4.Nijisane Phillip (TRI) 10.121
5.Joseph Veloce (CAN) 10.158
6. Matt Baranoski (USA) 10.161
(all these won their 1/8 final heats
and advance to 1/4 finals with two
others from the repechages.)
EDIT: actually Barrette (CAN) was
relegated in his 1/8 final but did
progress through the repechage.

In the USA the cycling events are streamed on ESPN (one has to dig to find the stream). Also available on CBC if you can use a Canadian IP address. Pretty good coverage.

Why is Canada doing so good all of sudden? 5 golds already.

Yes, my friend, obviously VEN and not COL for
Hersony Canelon, my mistake, no excuse.

The Canadians have had success on the women's
side with Dubnicoff, Muenzer, Whitten and the
team pursuit over the years, but I guess they've
invested money in their programs recently when
they got these games and the new velodrome.

Couldn't find any pictures but Lisandra Guerra (CUB)
who already had two silvers in the first two days had
to withdraw from the sprint with two splinters in her
arm from a crash in the early rounds of the sprint.
Not as big and alarming as the splinter Awang got
in Manchester in 2011, but still a pretty serious
and I suspect painful injury.

Some very elite fields and excellent performances at the
European Junior/U23 Track Championships in Greece:
http://www.uec.ch/en/component/k2/item/461-2015-uec-jun-u23-track-european-championships-full-results.html
Several medals for GB riders, including two Golds for
Matthew Gibson in the U23 Teams Pursuit (3:58.966
in the finals with Oliver Wood, Germain Burton and
Christopher Latham) and in the U23 scratch race.

Thanks for that, amigo. Very nasty looking!
Did anyone else spot former World Champ
Gord Singleton (CAN) manning the start
gates? He trained and raced a fair bit in
the UK in his prime (he won his title in
Leicester) and I must say he looks to
have aged rather well. :)

Went to the first round of the revolution series in Derby last night, which was also the first big cycling event at this new velodrome/leisure centre.

It's not a fast track so the men's GB pursuit time was fairly promising at 3.54. The biggest surprise was Francoise Pervis being beaten by Callumm Skinner in the Kilo. Pervis took a nasty fall in another event, but seemed to be ok.

Jo Rowsell won the individual pursuit with a great bit of measured riding as she was behind Ciara Horne until the last two laps. Katy Marchant beating the likes of Jess Varnish and Shanaze Read to win the 500. Must admit I'd never heard of her? Kate Archibald won the scratch race by taking a lap.

Still some standing available tickets for tomorrow's session with Wiggins and Cavendish reuniting in the Madison.

One oddity of this venue is that there is a gym in it with great views down onto the track. Spent an hour there today (work locally) watching Laura Trott and Jason Kenny amongst others. Beats the hell out of the backdrop to most gyms I'd imagine :)

I notice that Wiggins also sais it was not a fast track. Do you know why Derby is not a fast track?

Eat badly for a few years and move into a tiny flat, you'll soon find out :)

Wiggo refused to join the others for the victory presentation, even though he was sat a few yards away. I thought it might be because he didn't to steal the limelight, but he got a fine for it anyway.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about track variation. Maybe someone more knowledgeable out there?

Went to an open day a year before it opened and the constructor admitted then it wouldn't be a fast track. I mentioned in the 'New velodromes' thread that this is really a multi-use arena with a track in it. Also, it was built by the city council (in the teeth of the recession!) primarily for local use. Not with a specific event in mind like London, Manchester or Glasgow

Katy Marchant beats most of her domestic rivals at the GB track cycling champs in Manchester, taking four golds in the sprint events. Could we have found a new Queen Vic just in the nick of time?

Overlaps with the London six-day (18-23rd), which is also live on Eurosport :) Possibly not the first day though, due to the clash

Very impressed with Sir Brad and the men's team pursuit.
No one was 100% certain if Wiggo could still hit the speeds
that it is going to take to win in Rio, but in Derby he proved
he can do the last kilo at world record pace enroute to a 3.54
and in Grenchen he showed he can do the first 2000 at WR pace
enroute to a 3.55. Now him and the lads have got about 9 months
to concentrate on the magical 3:50 barrier which I'm sure the Aussies
and Kiwis have their sights on too...and the Swiss, Danes, and Russians
are all proven contenders that cannot be counted out of the medal hunt either.
