Karsten Kroon

24 Apr 2018 06:35

Today AD Sport published a confession by Karsten Kroon.

Or not really a confession .. he confessed to a journalist off the record and promised to go on the record before the Giro of 2017 - where he would be an analyst for AD. In the end he didn't go to the Giro and he changed his mind about the confession, and now the journalist publishes it anyway.

Not a lot of info is given about the what and how (yet?) though.

Teams:
1999 - 2005: Rabobank
2006 - 2008: CSC Pro Team
2009: Saxo Bank
2010 - 2011: BMC
2012 - 2014: Saxo Bank - Tinkoff

Niet lang daarna hebben we een avond lang in meer detail over het onderwerp (vooral over de periode en welke middelen) gesproken. Dat gesprek was off the record – dat heb ik Kroon bevestigd en die belofte ga ik niet schenden.
~~
Not long after we talked more in detail about the subject (especially about the period and what products). That talk was off the record - I confirmed this to Kroon and I'm not going to break that promise.

So yeah ... he doesn't want to be the journalist that keeps information secret, yet he also doesn't want break his promise. Ok then.

~~
Does it add anything, another ex-pro to the list of doping users? Maybe, maybe not. Probably not for everyone. But Kroon is not a nobody. He was one of the best Dutch one-day specialists at the time, he won a stage in the TdF and he's still active in cycling, currently as an analyst for Eurosport.

His best years were his Saxo years, when he transformed from a 2nd string helper at Rabobank into a classic contendor with 2nd in AGR and 3rd in FW as highlight. Also remember a few good Ronde van Vlaanderen by him in that period.

I wonder if that was the main period he doped in.

Probably the period he had the best doping, no doubt he doped most of his career like 99.9% of the rest.

The broadcasting of the Tour of Romandie prologue has just started on Eurosport with Kroon as commentator. He states that he will explain his situation after the current season and that he doesn't want to bother the current riders with this story. His colleague then affirmed this stance from the perspective of Eurosport and went on to say that they would focus on the race now.

Kroon is a tosser. How can he know the sport is cleaner and to state that without pointing to why makes him a liar and a dickehead.

He was one of those riders whose form and results dropped off so suddenly that you can almost put a date on the UCI warning letter. Some were able to dine out on their erstwhile reputations for a couple more seasons while others morphed into superdomestiques or road captains for the longer haul.

Guess he was referring to his own career. i.e. He was pro for 7 years before any real EPO test arrived. Was a pro before and after whereabouts system. A pro before and after Bio Passport so saw huge changes in peloton I would think.
