https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/03/the-white-house-is-already-walking-back-the-north-korea-deal-because-it-was-a-pr-stunt.html

Ultimately, this is just the latest episode in our current administration’s general policy of government by gimmickry, a practice that Slate’s editor in chief Julia Turner predicted would become the norm just before Trump took office, when the then-president elect announced that he was “saving” a Carrier plant:

The resulting press opportunity is the policy. The approach collapses any distinction between the work of leadership and the promotion of that work. It bypasses the abstractions of administration and substitutes visceral image-making instead. What Trump has laid out here is a troubling blueprint for government by stunt. ….

The approach is opportunistic rather than strategic, concerned with short-term victories rather than the unglamorous work of building something enduring and strong, anticipating and minimizing unintended consequences, understanding historical imperatives, and assessing the potential levers that can effect systemic change.

Of course many of those Carrier jobs were lost within 13 months. And it took less than 24 hours for the White House to walk back its groundbreaking North Korea announcement. The walk-back is the flipside of the government by stunt: There’s no immediate downside to running a country as a hollow PR apparatus. Whether or not the meeting ever happens—and more importantly, whether or not North Korea gives up its nukes—Trump got his headlines and won his news cycle. The press coverage of a meeting not occurring—should it fail to take place—won’t be nearly as noisy.

His supporters will remember his Nobel Prize–worthy victory. The media will ultimately forget about the episode like we’ve forgotten about the first time he gave up on Obamacare repeal, his subsequent Obamcare repeal victory party, his $1 trillion infrastructure plan, his agreement in September with Democrats to pass a DACA fix, his promises less than two weeks ago on gun control, and any countless number of other pretend policies that were actually PR stunts.

In the case of North Korean nuclear diplomacy, Trump could be long gone from the scene before this particular policy stunt ultimately results in failure. The stakes of Thursday’s announcement, from Trump’s perspective, were ultimately very low. Unfortunately, for the rest of us they couldn’t be higher.

https://www.dcreport.org/2018/03/09/why-the-stormy-daniels-case-matters/
...how likely it is that there are dark secrets out there that endanger our national security keep this in mind—plenty of journalists knew about Clifford. A few knew about the Playmate.

If American reporters knew these secrets, but could not get them out, imagine what a foreign power with sophisticated electronic surveillance and trained agents could know. Keep in mind that Trump’s national security adviser, who was on Putin’s payroll, is now a convicted felon. And he is only one of three men close to Trump who were caught lying to American law enforcement agents and are now convicted felons.
...
Whatever Clifford’s motives in coming forward, we can only hope that she is freed to speak and that this encourages others to who have been legally gagged by Trump to step forward.

We should also worry because what the Clifford lawsuit shows us is that Trump is subject to blackmail and leverage and yet he has unlimited access to every single one of our national security secrets.

We know that Trump has abused this power. Last year he delivered closely guarded secrets from an ally with the Russian foreign minister and the Russian ambassador in their jocular Oval Office meeting attended by only one other person, a photographer for the Kremlin-controlled news agency Tass.

Keep in mind that Daniels’ lawsuit goes to the heart of Trump being subject to blackmail. Now think not of illicit sex, but of all the lucrative business Trump is known to have done over decades with Russian mobsters and others with close ties to the Putin regime.

I'd like to see an FBI investigation into the Pakistani ISI spy ring in congress allegations - but what FBI are we going to get and what judges are going to adjudicate...

But, but, but, I thought the DOJ worked for donnie? Huh? Whitewash?

More from the trump clown car..

Which means Trump shot off his mouth and got excited and then his advisers had to explain to him why he can’t do that. Or maybe they haven’t explained it to him and are backing out without his permission. Whatever the explanation, the major policy change Trump announced appears to be completely moot because he plays the president on television but isn’t really president.

The guy is just plain stupid.

It's always been weird how the US uses some pretty Loopy logic.. guys from Saudi Arabia fly planes into the towers so we bomb Iraq.. Russia shows video simulation of bombing Florida so US gets angry with Turkey.. the US constantly talks about the respect for the Democratic process but backs people who are fighting their government void of any voting..
Now we have threats that the US government is ignoring..
Domestic lack of logic is playing out here in California.. government is suing feds over Mexican sewage contamination effecting many, regular citizens, border patrol, Navy Seals, wildlife, ect but we can't stop dirty water but want to build a 50 billion dollar wall to keep out the threats?
Now we are claiming that Canda's steel imports threaten national security but will give them a call pass?
I hope Stormy Daniels can do the job that the country desperately needs..

Aphro, thanks for that last link. I had been meaning to ask you what the Left thought about the tariffs. The media spin has been that most Republicans/conservatives are against them, but little has been said about the Dems, and last time I checked, Bernie, who of course campaigned against free trade much like Trump, hadn't commented. I'd think he would have a hard time criticizing Trump's actions, I 'm not sure he would have a more nuanced view as expressed in that link.

MI, I don’t think there is a formed left position yet. Dems have been playing the Republicans game for long now and don’t even think about economics. That’s to say: worst case Trump is clueless and disaster could follow; more likely there’s a con in this for the dollar and playing the market. Outside of US mercantilism. Neocons, I think, aren’t up to speed on this.

Off the cuff. I could be completely wrong.

One thing both the left and right would have to agree on is that the sanctions are based on at some level false information.. this is not.. can't be a matter of national security..
American smelters are nowhere near running at capacity..
The quality and special steels used in weapons and defense products can always be made in the US..it was never an issue..Cost was always at the root..
if Trump thinks raising the price of all steel..is the answer..he may be right..
Time and markets will shake that out..
Defense doesn't use the lion's share of steel.. steel used for construction and cars..low quality at best..in manufacturing, appliances? Low quality.
A government owned or wholly owned steel subsidiary BS relationship is the only free market answer for Trump's version of a free market..
As far as smaller government..the new tariff Dept will be busy.. people are going to start bolting things on to reclassify items..
No matter what..... this is not about national security..

Study finds that lies/fake news spread faster and further than true stories:

We investigated the differential diffusion of all of the verified true and false news stories distributed on Twitter from 2006 to 2017. The data comprise ~126,000 stories tweeted by ~3 million people more than 4.5 million times. We classified news as true or false using information from six independent fact-checking organizations that exhibited 95 to 98% agreement on the classifications. Falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information, and the effects were more pronounced for false political news than for false news about terrorism, natural disasters, science, urban legends, or financial information.

Aphro, ever heard of these folks?

https://dsa-lsc.org/

Libertarian socialists? Sounds like an oxymoron, but anyway:

the Libertarian Socialist Caucus is suspicious of centralized forms of governance and decision making processes that undermine freedom, solidarity, and democracy. Instead, we wish to promote the ability of individuals and communities to set their own priorities, both inside and outside the DSA [Democratic Socialists of America]. Governing authority is illegitimate in itself and can only be justified if it is delegated by and subordinated to a democratic assembly.

Russians ... Communists ... they want to take your guns away and make your wife have an abortion. Seriously, GOP exiles nearly going to Democratic Socialists of America.

dt said that drug dealers should get the death penalty. Does he mean the pharmaceutical companies that made 25X the amount of opioids and obscene profits, or the doctors who got paid to over prescribe the dope to patients who didn't need it?

Elevating kim to the international stage, essentially acknowledging he is a major player and nuclear power and get bubkiss in return..'art of the steal'. Like Putin, other world leaders play donnie like a cheap violin..all they gotta do is kiss his *** and they watch him make another fool out of himself.

adolf and those who blindly support him is sad...'master'..righto-

Trump does not study history; indeed, he apparently does not read much at all. He does not understand that when North Korea talks about denuclearisation, it means, primarily, the removal from the region of the US nuclear weapons the regime finds so threatening. Washington has never given such an undertaking and there is zero sign it will do so in future. It demands nothing less than North Korea’s unilateral disarmament.
