2016 Giro CQ Game

30 Apr 2016 18:54

Must be about time to start this...

Team of exactly nine riders
Budget Budget will be 3500 points. If you don't leave your team until the last moment, I'll be able to warn you of errors: if it is later than my going to bed on Thursday night, I'm unlikely to able to help.

Price of riders
CQ current score as at 1st May, with points accumulated over 12 months leading up to that date, for which the update file that CQ release on Monday 2nd will be considered definitive.
There is a dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game, and a facility for checking the team total.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at VR.
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care, no accents or other diacritics) It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams. If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

I have lodged my team with Premier Andrew (the first person to submit a team) so that there can be confidence that my inevitable failure did not come about by selecting badly from among the best of everyone else's ideas, but came from original bad picks.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Friday 6th May at 12:45 (UK time) (but don't expect any analysis of teams until I get in from work that evening).

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2). Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

Entries to 7 am Fri 6th (less than 6 hours left)

With 11 entries in so far, we have 41 different riders named (at least one of whom will not be in the race), and 17 unique picks. Three riders are on more than half the teams. 2 1/2 days to go....

A few more into the inbox overnight, now 25 entries all of which are correct.

62 out of the 198 presumed starters have been selected, 29 as unique picks, 7 on 10 or more teams, and the most popular pick is on 17 of them.

About 29 1/2 hours to go as of the timestamp on this message: don't miss out.

I chose to go with another tactic than I use to, time will show if that's the way to go (I have made a "normal" team as well, which I will follow accordingly on the side).

Good luck and may the goal be pink!

I would like to participate but i can't send a PM, i think it's because i don't have enough posts on the forum. Is there any other way to send you my team? Can i post it here?

You need 10 posts I believe so you could post in a few threads and then try.

5 1/2 hours to go as of the timestamp on this post: please check the list in the OP to make sure your team has arrived safely in my inbox.

From this point, I can't return your team for review if it has budget or selection errors: please double check if you have left it to the 11th hour.

47 teams in, 86 riders selected, of which 39 are unique picks, 3 are on 20 or more teams, and one is on over 30.

The major tactical spends

I was just thinking as I drove to work yesterday that it is a compliment to his consistent high scores that I have never seen Valverde named as a pick in one of these games, and then I got home and found that someone had picked him.

Who else did we splash out more than 750 points on?

Valverde alone: Kazistuta

Nibali
with Landa: 18-Valve, Armchair_Cyclist, Geraint TooFast, Hugo87, JustSomeGuy, Rote Laterne
with Majka: Comodoro, Tom-Jelte
alone: Amis Velo, Nairo Q, Search
Landa
with Zakarin: Bbass, Carlo_Algatrensig, Hakkie2, Joelsim, LeadBelly, Shalgo, Yellow Knight
with Majka: Laarsland
with Chaves: Postmanhat
alone: ArchieBoy, Capt_Cavman, DJW, Fauniera, GodChild, Jancouver, JosephD, Kabete, LosBrolin, Murrjt, PremierAndrew, SemirS, Tigerion

Colbrelli with Zakarin: Trudgin

Zakharin with Majka: GPBlanco, Scrool07
alone: Barmaher, Crevaison, LightBing, Mellow Velo, Minessa, Murali

Majka alone: Blues in the Bottle, Torcia86, Vladimir

Chaves alone: Caruut

The top 9 riders would have been a bit overbudget, so I have swapped the less expensive of those with 16 pick for the less expensive of those with 15 to give an on-budget (and in fact the cheapest team in the game) as the Collective Wisdom squad as:
LANDA MEANA Mikel
ZAKARIN Ilnur
URAN URAN Rigoberto
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto

And as stated, I tried a daring tactic. Valverde is daamn expensive, but a GC win is worth almost seven stage wins (and Piti will definitely get some stage placings as well). He is likely to be the top point scorer in the giro (if he wins the GC that is), and pairing him with another sprint-capable GC rider in Uran (who's a serious top5 candidate) will in my logic be better than to pair Nibali with Landa.

That left room for two swing-and-miss sprinters in Pelucchi and Ruffoni (well, both of them might be out after 12 stages), breakaway artist Kadri, potential top20 and mountain jersey wearer Niemic and the three wid cards Martinez, Rybalkin (both decent in mountains, should be in breakaways) & Foliforov.

A fun experiment on my behalf, whereas I usually tend to play safe and stay on top of the popularity rankings.

Certainly an interesting tactic. personally I think the high cost is going to much, I think taking Landa (why I would say is on par with Piti for GC victory and add Kittel for the same price will have a better return.
Hell for the points you could take Landa and Uran and even if they both finish just outside the podium (4th and 5th) the still score more with double the chances for podium finishes and the like.
