Standings: All the Aru teams in the top 13 dropped roughly the same number of points, so none of them changed position at all. Hayabusa is the top placed to have moved, and Armchair Cyclist's 9 place rise is the best of the day.

But in the all important Brajkovic/Kiserlovski battle, Janez had an off day, finishing 4:45 behind his rival, and losing 3 places on GC, while Kiserlovski moves up 2 GC places. That means there are now just 2 points between Squire and Fauniera, and 53 seconds between the two unaware protagonists.

Kiserlovski in today's big break: could be the key to deciding the game winner.

37. Kiserlovski
40. Brajkovic

:D

Robert was pretty weak in that break though. Couldn't keep up with the big group. The third week will be a nailbiter.

Stage 15 Nearly mayhem in the Midi

Green points

This is where points in the Tour game are harder to come by than in the Giro/Vuelta editions. In Mayor August, there are budget riders who might feature in such a breakaway: only one of this lot would have cost less than 300pts of your budget.

Standings:
Kiserlovski was in the break, and although he didn't feature in the latter stages (he was overtaken by Dan Martin near the end), he was 5'20 ahead of Brajkovic, whom he overtakes, as well as a few others, thus boosting Fauniera ahead of Search. Amis Velo also moves up to the virtual podium. Pirate81, Los Brolin and Comodoro all moved up 2 spots, nobody did more.

Rest Day 2

So where have all those points come from?

Green points
Unlike the green jersey IRL, this catgory yields the same amount of points every day: 80 to the stage winner down to 1 for tenth, plus 20 point bonus for whoever receives the yellow that evening (no bonus next Sunday though)

Looking at this, its no wonder that those with Kittel and Aru dominate (No-one combines Kittel with Froome or Demare):
1 KITTEL Marcel 402 16 teams
2 FROOME Chris 275 2 teams
3 MATTHEWS Michael 202 0 team
4 DEMARE Arnaud 190 1 team
5 ARU Fabio 182 20 teams
6 THOMAS Geraint 164 1 team
7 BARGUIL Warren 145 6 teams
8 URAN URAN Rigoberto 138 3 teams
9 BOASSON HAGEN Edvald 122 0 team
10 BARDET Romain 120 5 teams
10 GROENEWEGEN Dylan 120 2 teams
12 KRISTOFF Alexander 115 0 team
13 GREIPEL André 112 1 team
14 MARTIN Daniel 110 1 team
15 CALMEJANE Lilian 85 0 team
16 SAGAN Peter 81 0 team
17 MOLLEMA Bauke 80 0 team

Yellow Points
This includes the above, but also points for the mountain and points categories in the same distribution as for a stage, and the GC standings points: 600 for first, then 450, 380, 320, 290 down to 21 for 50th and 20 for all finishers below that.

1 FROOME Chris 887 2 teams
2 ARU Fabio 636 20 teams
3 KITTEL Marcel 502 16 teams
4 BARDET Romain 500 5 teams
5 URAN URAN Rigoberto 458 3 teams
6 MARTIN Daniel 408 1 team
7 BARGUIL Warren 345 6 teams
8 LANDA MEANA Mikel 338 0 team
9 MATTHEWS Michael 272 0 team
10 YATES Simon 257 0 team
11 CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto 220 1 team
12 MEINTJES Louis 215 19 teams
13 QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander 193 0 team
14 DEMARE Arnaud 190 1 team
15 GREIPEL André 167 1 team
16 THOMAS Geraint 164 1 team
17 KRISTOFF Alexander 160 0 team
17 CARUSO Damiano 160 0 team
19 BOASSON HAGEN Edvald 152 0 team
20 GROENEWEGEN Dylan 145 2 teams

The problem that most managers found was selecting any riders who were inexpensive but had much point winning potential. The average budget per rider was 444, so moderately expensive picks (between average and 2x average spend) could have yielded:
URAN URAN Rigoberto 458 3 teams
LANDA MEANA Mikel 338 0 teams
MEINTJES Louis 215 19 teams
THOMAS Geraint 164 1 teams
CARUSO Damiano 160 0 teams
BENNETT George 138 1 teams
CALMEJANE Lilian 134 0 teams
LATOUR Pierre 110 3 teams
GALLOPIN Tony 90 0 teams
BUCHMANN Emanuel 88 7 teams

Spending between average and half of that offered little earning power, with one notable exception:
BARGUIL Warren 345 6 teams
VUILLERMOZ Alexis 109 0 team
MARTIN Guillaume 107 2 teams
NIEVE ITURRALDE Mikel 101 2 teams
ROCHE Nicolas 76 0 team
KREUZIGER Roman 72 5 teams
KÜNG Stefan 70 2 teams
PAUWELS Serge 66 6 teams
BAKELANTS Jan 62 1 team
KIRYIENKA Vasil 55 0 team
SELIG Rüdiger 52 0 team
HARDY Romain 52 0 team

And the riders half of budget or below, who we all have to look at to be able to afford the top men, have had very little to offer, most of us having at least opted for the best return available:
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto 82 22 teams
FEILLU Brice 77 0 teams
NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel 47 11 teams
DEGAND Thomas 39 0 teams
GASTAUER Ben 37 0 teams
KISERLOVSKI Robert 35 12 teams
BROWN Nathan 34 4 teams
BRAJKOVIC Janez 31 6 teams
CIMOLAI Davide 30 2 teams
GAUTIER Cyril 30 0 teams
MOINARD Amaël 24 0 teams
VANSPEYBROUCK Pieter 23 0 teams

Kiserlovski again did better than Brajkovic, so Fauniera's lead grows. Ten riders move up one place: Just Some Guy in 12th being the highest placed of them. 7 of those sharing in the daily riser award do so courtesy of Carlos Algatrensig's Bennett related losses.

Standings
Kiserlovski now has about 3 minutes over Brajkovic: if Squire is to make up ground, it might have to be through Tulik, Poljanski or Bevin (or a DNF for Voeckler, Boudat or Kozhatayev). Laarsland overtakes Hugo87, placing the three Uran teams in the top 4. Although Froome is the rider who least obviously gained points from Aru's difficulties, but the two biggest risers are the two who invested in him: Armchair up 8 to 7th, and Bicycle Boy up 10 spots. 6 and 7 place leaps respectively bring The Pirate81 and AlPacino into the top ten as well as Armchair.

Standings

Kiserlovski beats Brajkovic in the battle that neither of them know about, but suddenly it is much less important. Good news for Barguil and Bardet, losses for Uran and Aru, and suddenly Amis Velo jumps from third to top spot. The other team with both Bar-men, Al Pacino, rises from 10th to 6th, but DJW's 6 place jump is best of the day.

Stage 19 Which way around the roundabout?

A day that will not be causing much change in the game:

ARNDT Nikias 50 0 team
KEUKELEIRE Jens 35 0 team
BENNATI Daniele 25 0 team

Standings
Hayabusa and Mellow Velo both scored, slightly, today. Froome has now got more points in this category than Kittel, but Froome teams had less back up quality in their teams, so are still 19th and 20th in this classification.

In the absence of Kittel, I can't imagine Sunday having any more impact on the game than today did (or than Sunday will in the real event), so it is all down to tomorrow.

Yes: we have a draw. I had expected Uran and Contador to pass Bardet and Barguil respectively, and I was aware that hat would give Amis Velo a lead of just 6 points. But then Uran took 3 points for 8th on the stage, halving the margin. And that placing raised Uran to 8th behind Matthews in the points competition: 2 more points in favour of Fauniera. And in that move, he overtook Barguil, losing him a point for his placing in that category, and with that point the gap between our two leaders disappeared.

Other than Fauniera's rise to share the top step, only 8 other teams improved their positions on the day: Laarsland has as narrow an advantage as is possible over Hugo87 for 4th, and I move up 2 places (riser of the day) to 6th.

I thought i was 3 points behind as i didn't check the points classification. Now it would be nice if Signore Cimolai could stay outside the top ten tomorrow...

Edit: Just realized that a handful of sprinters can pass both Uran and Barguil in the points competition tomorrow. Damn.

What follows is the long-winded version of what Fauniera says above:

So will it stay a draw?
We can ignore what might happen to the riders they have in common (ARU Fabio, MEINTJES Louis, BOUDAT Thomas, KISERLOVSKI Robert, BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto, VOECKLER Thomas)

So that leaves the potential and vulnerabilities of BARDET Romain, BARGUIL Warren and CIMOLAI Davide (for Amis Velo) pitched against those of KITTEL Marcel, URAN URAN Rigoberto and KOZHATAYEV Bakhtiyar for Fauniera.

Kittel can clearly neither gain nor lose points at this stage.
Cimolai is probably the only one of the 6 with even a slim chance of a top ten place: he did get 6th in the bunch sprint in Pau.

So long as all five remaining in the race finish tomorrow, their GC points are most unlikely to change (the three well placed riders won't let it happen, and the other 2 are so far away from the top 50 that they will get neither more than less than the 20 "other finishers" points). Equally the only way KoM rankings will make a difference is if three riders in the top 12 of that ranking fail to finish, which won't happen.

So the real potential for change is in the standings in the Points category. No-one expects Uran or Barguil to improve on their standings in that category tomorrow, but there are still sprinters who could overtake them. And whereas Uran is susceptible to losing 3 points, Barguil's vulnerability is only 1 point.

The best remaining sprinters (Matthews, Boassen Hagen, Colbrelli, Greipel, Kristoff) can't overtake the two key riders for the simple reason that they are already ahead of them, but there are highly accomplished sprinters who definitely have them within range, so there are three riders who hold the destination of the game in their gift: Groenewegen, Degenkolb and Bouhanni.
If more than one rider passes Uran, advantage is with Amis Velo; if none passes Uran, but one or more overhauls Bardet, then advantage to Fauniera. Otherwise it remains a tie.

To pass Barguil
Groenewegen needs just a top ten finish, or 11th+15th at intermediate, or 12th+14th etc down to 15th + 11th, or top 9 at intermediate regardless of finish position.
Degenkolb needs top 2 at finish, or 3rd + 14th, or 4th + 12th, 5th + 10th, 6th +8th, 7th + 6th, 8th +4th, 10th+3rd, 12th+2nd or 15th +1st.
Bouhanni needs just 1 more point, so 2nd, 3rd +13th, 4th +11th, 5th +9th, 6th + 7th, 7th + 5th, 8th + 4th, 9th + 3rd, 11th + 2nd or 14th +1st.

To pass Uran:
Groenewegen needs top 6, or 7th+15th, 8th + 13th, 9th + 11th, 10th + 10th, 11th + 9th, 12th + 8th, 13+7, 14+6 or 15+5
Degenkolb needs 2nd, 3rd + 8th, 4th + 6th, 5th + 4th, 6th + 3rd, 7th + 2nd or 9th + 1st
or Bouhanni needs 2nd, 3rd + 7th, 4th + 5th, 5th + 4th, 6th + 3rd, 7th + 2nd or 8th + 1st

Confused yet?

Edit: Just realized that a handful of sprinters can pass both Uran and Barguil in the points competition tomorrow. Damn.

But they might pass Barguil but not Uran, to your advantage. You essentially need Groenewegen to get 7-12 points, Degenkolb to get 22-27, or Bouhanni to get 23-28, so long as none of them get more than the 2nd value. If one o them gets more than that, it is probably still a tie.

I don't think anyone relevant picked up points at the intermediate sprint.

So barring Cimolai doing better than expected:
Fauniera needs Groenewegen to come 7th-10th, without a top 2 placing for Degenkolb or Bouhanni;
Amis Velo needs 2 (or 3) of the following three events: Groenewegen in top 6, Degenkolb in top 2, Bouhanni in top 2.

But Cimolai did get a top ten place, so before doing the calculations, I think that is a 3 point win for Amis Velo.

So I'll have to put up with his gloating. He isn't a poster on either of the forums (occasional lurker) that host the game, but I used to teach his daughter and I invited him to join in then, and I still email him the details and links. Then he goes and beats me most events.

Missing the Giro-Tour double by 3 points ain't fun. Or by Landa's 1 second. But then its nearly funny as well.

Anyway, congrats to AmisVelo! And thanks to Armchair cyclist for the game!

Think not being an active poster warrants disqualification from the competition.

Now just to find a way to disqualify the other 8 people above me in the competition...

Perhaps not the parade of sprinting talent that we usually have on the Champs Elysees, and maybe that's why they are not major picks in the game. No yellow jersey bonus today.

Froome outscored Kittel in this category because of leader's bonuses, but it is Kittel teams that dominate with 14 of the top 15 (Amis Velo being the exception). The route to success here is not necessarily sprinters (Kazistuta's sprinter dominated team only came 6th): Barguil and Uran outscore Groenewegen and Demare;Aru, Bardet and Thomas beat Greipel and Kristoff.

No splitting the top two: they have the same riders who took green points, and any riders held by one butnot the other managed no top ten finishes.

Final standings
That 7th place from Cimolai is what made the difference in the end: It gives the victory to Amis Velo. The constantly flip-flopping battle between Hugo and Laarsland is finally settled in Hugo's favour for 4th, and Kazistuta finishes with a flourish and a 4 place ride.

As with the Giro, teams with the race winner were not really in the hunt for the victory, but I'm fairly happy with my top ten and 2/3 of the points coming from Froome.

I'll do a bit more number analysis tomorrow.

Until then, congratulations to those who are happy that they did well, especially Amis Velo, Fauniera and Squire, commiserations to those who feel they had hard luck (that'll mainly be teams picking Kittel, Porte, Cavendish, Majka, Fuglsang, Izaguirre...), and thanks to everyone for having a go.

The balance of preferences as expressed before the game was that next year we keep the same budgets but drop to 8 riders per team, as will be the case in the races. Is that what you are happy with?

See you for the Vuelta (although I am away for the first weekend of that, so it might be a bit awkward to get it going)
