Zinoviev Letter wrote:The European Track Championships have actually reminded me of Kirby's strong points. When he's commentating on road racing, most of the tiny minority of viewers who are obsessive enough about the sport to post on cycling forums are all too aware that they know more about the sport than him. As I definitely don't know more than him about the intricacies of track, particularly the non-Olympic events, I can appreciate him much more. He's engaging, he has the professional commentator's ability to inject excitement and he works well with expert co-commentators, getting explanations from the guy who actually does know the details. Ultimately it's a reminder that his job when he's commentating on road races isn't to impress the nerds, it's to engage the casual majority of the audience.

That's a fair comment. But as you say, in the absence of any in-depth analysis or insight, he relies on his personality to guide and entertain viewers.
I don't know the guy, but, unlike you, l find his public/TV persona border-line insufferable, unfortunately.

This comment actually made me laugh. Not only does the poster seem like an entitled adolescent who is whining about not getting his or her way, the implication is s/he tuned in just to listen to the commentary.

So you finally realized that I'm not Carlton Kirby. How long did that take you? Must have been at least a year. Seems you're not the swiftest ship in her majesty's fleet, but you do tend to catch on after a while. So righto, mate. If i had any skills whatsoever, I'd post a photo of Carlton Kirby in shopping channel gear. Meantime, try to enjoy the legend that is CK. The man is a splendid commentator and raconteur. He's a guy with whom I'd love to have a pint and shoot the stool. Don't you dare try to tell me otherwise.

Well we're almost there for 2018!

Rob Hatch is doing Valencia, Strade Bianchi then Paris-Nice. Jose Been tweeted Dutch ES's races which suggest a similar pattern early on to last season: Valencia, Dubai, Andalucia, Algarve, Abu Dhabi, Omloop, KBK and Le Samyn.

Tour Down Under kicks things off this weekend with their crit on Sunday then the TDU for real on Tuesday. UK viewers were facing a blackout but Freesports (recently added FTA channel on all digital platforms) have picked the whole thing up with live coverage on Sun/Tues/Thurs/Sat/Sun and delayed on Wed/Fri.

That's funny! Seriously, I lol'd.
Long live Carlton Kirby. That guy is underappreciated by the cycling crowd.
Thanks for sharing.
