That's true, but 09 also lends itself to the point I was attempting to make.

That will be tricky considering he isn't riding the Tour this year.

That's not to be excluded. It all depends on what he does in the Giro. If he wins, there's a strong chance he will be at the Tour. If he doesn't then he probably won't be, however, the team and the rider have not excluded a priori his possible presence at the Tour. Nibali is also aware of perhaps having to share leadership roles if Ivan does the Tour.

I think with so many klicks in time trials at the Tour this year, Basso realizes that he has to feel in exceptional form to line up in France. Although it's the same for Andy Shleck. This race propably favors Evans on paper, though without Contador there's room for surprises for sure.

IF Contador couldn't do it. Basso WILL NOT certainly. 'nuff said I think.

Before responding why don't you read first what I said. I wasn't talking about him winning, but participating. ;)

While his terrible performance in today's time trial (ToR) means he practically hasn't got a chance of winning in France, no matter what he does in the Giro.

More to the point Basso couldn't do it in 2010 with far more favourable circumstances.

But rhubruma wasn't talking about him winning and im pretty sure iZnoGouD was joking

No, but I'm sure he could certainly take a MTF stage win in the manner than Vanendert and Rolland did last year - being far enough out of contention that you are not worth marking, especially not if you're going to just drag Nibali up far enough for him to attack.

If he feels fit enough to do that after the Giro, he would certainly be worth having at the Tour, both for stages and for some help for Nibali in the mountains. What I definitely wouldn't do is let him think that he is in any way joint leader of the team - Nibali should be the sole leader.

Wouldn't it be smarter for Basso to ride the Vuelta?

Aye, true, but he's only ridden it once before. Just had a cursory look at the Liquigas roster, and apart from Nibali and Basso, they don't really have a guy with any GT pedigree. If they want to go for the overall at the Vuelta, Basso has to ride it, but they might prefer just to go for stages with someone like Viviani. Also not sure what Basso would prefer - one last Tour hurrah or an attempt at the Vuelta?

I voted No because i think his time is over and his performances at romandie were also not very encouraging.
But if he would win this it would be a nice last GT victory for him :)

If liquigas was my team, it'd be Basso Giro to win, Tour to pull super domestique duties with Szmyd.
Nibali for the Tour win, and the Vuelta to see what he has left. The other option is Basso Giro for the win, Vuelta co captain with Nibali.

On all the youtube vids i can't find the moment when Basso drops Evans???
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong

The Grand Boucle wasn't just Europe's for the taking.

Basso has a good engine although he might have lots of troubles on the descent of Giau. I can see it already: Schleck and Basso attacking on the descent.

To me, they are the 2 greatest x marks of the Giro. If they aren't on form, the race may be truely different.
