I think he's leaving Movistar, that's why he's not racing anymore...

Well yeah, he is most likely leaving and tbh Im quite happy about that. If he just could string one year together... he has been unlucky tho, he was really climbing well in the Vuelta and the injuries transferred to the next season which put him behind and he could never quite catch up. Still, he is not worth betting on anymore for Movistar.

I doubt he'd be comfortable at an English speaking team.
He was Movistar 2nd best rider at the Giro finishing 15th in GC despite the huge loss of time on the Finestre stage after being in the early break. His problem is that having finished in the top 20 in the last two GTs he's completed he has shown himself as neither a potential leader nor a useful domestique. Movistar will probably do with him what they did with Pardilla.

An Italian PCT team wouldn't be too bad for him, Savio would probably give him a results based contract and he has already raced for an Italian team before.
In the end it wasn't a bad signing for Movistar, he got them a few decent results and if he didn't crash durning the last Vuelta he could have been even better.
I mean look at Diego Rosa at Sky, almost no results besides winning Coppi e Bartali and apparently they are paying +1M per season (overall 3.5M for 3 years).

He didn't prove AG2R wrong, though.

It was not the case of proving AG2R wrong. He proved himself wrong with his behavior. His results at Movistar didn't prove anything.

He was going to have his best results in that Vuelta 2017. He is a decent rider but he needs to be a good domestique now.

Should stick to the hilly classics and one week stage races.

He’d either implode completely or make Eddy Merckx look like a journeyman.

One week later and still nothing. I (finally!) gave up on him as a professional rider, but I hope everything is good on a personal level because he seems a fragile person.

He might race Memorial Marco Pantani and Trofeo Matteotti this coming weekend.
At least he's on the start list for the latter, according to PCS.
