Also he needs a good team with no secondary targets to at least put the leader into difficulty/make the race hard. They were non existent in the TDF. Considering that the TDF is raced at much higher levels a good team is essential. Cadel lost the 2008 TDF because he had no one to chase Sastre properly.

He'll race Tour 2019, no Giro.

Really missed Kelderman. Geschke and Arndt were great, Kragh Andersen as well.
Add Oomen and you have 5/7 riders for the supporting cast.
Matthews is probably focused on his own goals so maybe he shouldn´t be in the Tour team.
They need to replace Ten Dam with a younger/better climber and add another TT/climbing domestique. Maybe Kämna can grow into that role.
Matthews can work as a good domestique who can sprint for himself in hilly finales, he'll remain the leader in Milan Sanremo, Amstel, share leadership in LBL.

Btw, what's his build-up going to be for Innsbruck?

I'm gonna go for the risky bet here that it starts with chilling out for a few weeks first. I think Binckbanck comes too early, but I guess he'll ride Canada and maybe stuff like Plouay or a few of the Italian semi classics before the WC

criteriums, then at least a week rest. Then I think Canadian races and maybe italian race.
He's not going to compete with the dudes coming out of Vuelta though.

And 3 times a peak is hard

This double is a bit of shame in that regard. Probably his only shot at the Worlds RR.

2019 and 2020 will probably both be Tour, with I guess Olympic TT as one of the main goals of 2020

No, he will only race Tour of Germany and then TTT, ITT, Road race.

Obviously some criteriums next week as well.

He also said he considers himself too young to do 2 GTs every year, and that going for the Tour next year is logical, although if the route absolutely sucks for him he implied that he'll go for the Giro cause he loves that race too.

It would be nice, yes, but unfortunately Gesing signed a 3 year extension with Lotto-NL Jumbo just a few days ago.
I think maybe Sunweb should try to sign Mollema for next year, he would be a great superdomestique for Tom.
But maybe he is too expensive and a lower profile guy would be enough, preferably one that can TT well and can do some work on the flats as well.

Just realized he and Thomas are now the only riders who beat Chris Froome in a GT in the last 2 years.

He's the first non-Sky rider to finish higher than Froome in the TdF since 2008.

2009, 2010, 2011 DNS
2012 beaten by Wiggins
2013 won
2014 DNF

2017 won
2018 beaten by Thomas and Dumoulin

Thomas and Wiggins both ride for Sky, so Dumoulin is the first rider to finish ahead of Froome since the 2008 Tour.

In that case, he's the first non-Sky rider to finish ahead of Froome since 1903 :surprised:

Since in 2008 he finished 83th I guess a few non-Sky riders must have beaten him, so nope. :)

That's not the Tour de France.

I wonder what the media is gonna do after this 2nd place. They're soooo euphoric with this 2nd place.
