Third today in the TT in Tour of Poland:

From Lotto NL site:

Primoz Roglic finished third in the final stage of the Tour de Pologne today. In the time trial around Kraków, he only was beaten by Alex Dowsett and Jonathan Castroviejo (both Movistar). Victor Campenaerts finished fifth. Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) won the general classification.

“It was our ambition to win this time trial,” Sports Director Addy Engels said. “Primoz Roglic and Victor Campenaerts did a good job and a time trial is always a fair thing, so this feels kind of double. We had two possible winners in our team, so the victory needs to be your target as well. We were not really that close. Primoz lost 39 seconds on Dowsett. That’s not a shame, but on a good day, it might've be the other way around.”

Circumstances

Roglic was satisfied with his place. “Of course you want to win, but it was a completely flat time trial,” he added. “That makes it harder for me to reach a high pace. I lost it on speed and power today. I wasn’t able to push harder than I did.

"It was a very hard week here in Poland. The weather conditions made it even harder. I’m learning from weeks like this. To ride such a hard race in these circumstances as the team’s leader makes me better. This is good for my development.”

“When you just look at the results, you have to conclude that we didn’t reach our targets,” Engels continued. “We wanted to deliver a good general classification with Primoz, wanted to sprint with Moreno Hofland and win the time trial. We failed. The time trial wasn’t bad today and Moreno delivered some good sprints. This isn’t a huge disappointment, but it could have been better.”

I expected more of Roglic in poland, in the TT and specially in the GC, perhaps the weather conditions were too heavy for everyone except Wellens.

He will race anything before the Olympics?

The thing is he got a WT contract because of his climbing ability and his first good results this year came in Algarve also on the climbs. I find it hard to believe he suddenly forgot how to climb. In Poland he lost contact of the 20 riders group on the descent 20km to go because he was freezing. I still believe he has the ability to become very good in mountainous and hilly races. I think it'd be a shame if he limited himself to only focus on time-trialling. On the other hand he is not the youngest anymore so he has to be wise in choosing what speciality is good for him going forward. For now his main goal is the olympic ITT.

Was hoping he would maybe ride the Vuelta after the Olympics, but it seems he will ride this 5 day race instead:

Good job at the TT for a first timer, beating the likes of Tony Martin, even though Martin was probably not at his best.

Time to bring this thread back from the dead perhaps? :)

Primož seem to be on very good form this season with a good result in Tour of Velencia and now is also leading the overall in Volta ao Algarve. Definitely looking forward to more this.

Oh nice. I had thought he would maybe be helping Kruijswik in the Giro like last year.

Yes, Roglic is scheduled to ride the Tour de France this year together with Gesink, Bennett, Groenewegen and the rest of the sprint clan. My guess is he will be stage hunting which is probably a good thing in his first tour. He still has to prove to be consistent for over a week.

This guy is really still a big '?'. Still can't figure out how strong he really is. He had some bad luck with the weather in the races where he was the team leader last year. And he had too many crashes last year. He might be GT material tough especially having his strong TT as a weapon.

Are you sure about the Tour? I'd like him to do the Giro again and try to be of more help to Kruijswijk than last year. His help in the high mountains was almost non existent. It was mainly because of his crashes...he crashed what, 4 or 5 times. And that's one of the most important thing for him IMO. To learn how to ride in a peloton in a GT day in and day out without being involved in a crash. I'm sure he improved in this aspect from the beginning of last year, but I'm not sure the nervous stages of the Tour are the right choice for him just yet.

Next I'd like him to show something in the high mountains. He'll ride Tirreno-Adriatico next month and the stage to Terminillo will be a nice test.

Also here is a quote from him after today's stage (from the team website):

Roglic said that he is not a time trial specialist after the stage. It could surprise some given his time trial victory in the Giro d’Italia and the Slovenian national title.
"I do not have to be the best in time trials. I want to do everything possible to be good in the mountains and grow into a classification rider.

This is the first time he says he wants to be a GC rider.

Plans can be changed of course, but Gesink said that Primoz will join him in the TDF at the team presentation in an interview with wielerflits. Giro would be nice, but there will be a 100% focus on Kruijswijk. Roglic is not really the domestique type I guess and if Lotto want to keep this guy in the team they should give him his own chances. They can't really afford to loose him not having many guys that can win in the first place.

Anyway, I'm not an insider. Just saying what I read in the press up till now and adding my own guesses about the reasoning.

Roglic is not planned for the Giro. Might be good, might be the surprise Lotto rider at the Tour since Gesink is going for stage hunting

Next: Strade and Tirreno (last year was going well until the uphill finish was cancelled)

I want to see he doing Pais Vasco and Liege this year.

Fantastic win for him. Even if the Giro TT stage win was bigger, I'm more pleased with this win. I see him as a GC rider and not a TT specialist. The Algarve GC victory shows he is on the right track.

Same here. I think he should do really well in those races. Also T-A will be a good test to see where he stands against top GC riders. Would be nice if LottoNL brings a strong TTT squad there.

I am still reminded of this win he had on a long climb in Tour de Azerbaijan Stage 2 2015. He went up against Chris Horner and several less known climbers as well and won the stage and also overall with a solo attack.
