Because Leipheimer was absolutely ridiculous that day.

interesting tidbit, there haven't been that many ITTs that are mostly climbing ones in the last few years. There are a few that standout, 2014 Giro, 2016 Route du Sud, 2013 pais vasco, and now this one, 2018 tour de romandie.

The riders that seem to standout, in no particular order have been Primoz Roglic, Richie Porte, Fabio Aru, Rigoberto Uran, Pierre Rolland, Chris Froome, Dumolin and Nairo Quintana. Of these, Nairo and Aru both have stated that they consider themselves the best at this discipline. IMO, this was Nairo's expertise. Now? Obviously Bernal but Roglic is right in there! would love to see a world championship that happens to be an ITT. I believe last time that happened, Santiago Botero won

He's been practicing on his TT bike, since the time trial in Cali is coming up. So it seems he's taking it very seriously. It's close to flat, so it'll be the first time we'll actually see what his new position, his work in the wind tunnel and his new materials are worth against somewhat representative competition. I'm looking forward to his H2H with Bardet - weird for the latter to go to Cali imo btw.

Yeah, I picked that up on Strava as well. Seems like he got a few very good TT intervals in his legs judging by his heart rate. That will be the most interesting of the stages to me in Cali

Really impressive win, but at this point already expected (scary thing to say about a 21 y/o). Anyway, he has really found his person of trust and luitenant within Team Sky in the form of Geoghegan Hart, great to see. Together they'll achieve some big things. The real test comes Thursday!

For me the main thing I'm interested in is how his uniclimb performances hold up to the very tough mountain stages.

Is it too early to anoint him as one of the favorites for the WCRR?

Yes.

He's on form right now while everyone else is peaking much later in the season

I agree, but one has to wonder. I’ve been saying the same thing after every one of his great performances all year.

Will he be the super-dom for Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France?

God I hope not. Would love to see him as a protected rider at the Vuelta.

I just don't know what this kid's ceiling is. I've "only" been following cycling for 22 years but he's far and away the best GT type prospect at this age (yes, Andy Schleck was great but Bernal is so much more complete). I appreciate that doesn't guarantee future dominance but, still, excluding injuries or suspensions it's hard to imagine he won't win multiple Grand Tours.

And he didn't even tried 250+km one-day races, which are entirely a different beast to what he did in his career so far. To be fair, I would be very surprised if he ends up in top 10 at the Worlds.

He did quite well in Il Lombardia last year though.

He was 13th in Lombardia last year, his very first classic. And no, he won’t go to the Tour. He’ll go to La Vuelta.

By the time the Worlds come around he will be the favourite, not just a top ten contender.

Reckon Geoghan Hart's speed on the climb put most on the limit including Bernal - I suspect Bernal may be vulnerable in the queen stage.

I suspect he won’t be vulnerable. He looked absolute fine.

No-one wins every suitable stage or race.

I agree, but with this field it’s more likely than if he were racing in Europe.
