Overall, the first 9 day has been a success. Yes, Quintana lost a bit of time, Valverde didn't win a stage and Landa, Rojas is out and Landa crashed, but you can't ask for more this this. Froome is the reference and Valv is a bit ahead, Landa same time and Quintana a bit down, but not much. Now the race starts!

Agree - this was a superb stage from them. Somehow juggled keeping multiple key players safe and recovering losses when they did happen. I did not expect that at all

Amador and Bennati did a great job today. Protecting Quintana for most of the race and later on doing the work for Landa. Quintana entered the cobbles in a top 10 position every single time.

Agreed. They did a great job, they've kept their 3 leaders in the GC fight while others have fallen away. Tomorrow starts the real race with a nice descent finish. Impressed Movistar was able to get Landa very close to where he only lost a handful of seconds today. Even without getting Valverde a stage win they did a great job of managing the first week.

I must confess that watching Nairo latched to GVA wheel in some of the last cobbled sectors looked unreal

If somebody have doubt, from today everything is clear, Valverde is greatest rider ever!
Great team performance, but how strong Bala is today, it's unreal!

Bennati is a monster, probably the best bodyguard that a lightweight climber could have on flat stages.

Yeah, he always does an amazing job since he lost his top speed. His work for Nibali, Contador and Valverde was very over the years, especially Contador had stupidly strong Tour teams in 2013 and 2014.

Erviti and Amador pulled Landa, not Benna...

Great performance by Valverde today. He was marking a lot of the moves today.

You need to go to the Froome thread or the clinic ASAP. Don`t come here with your nonsense

Quiet day today. I hope tomorrow we'll see some action, Landa seems most likely to attack.

The loss of Rojas is pretty bad, Soler is super inconsistent since Catalunya, so this is pretty much bound to happen. God I wish they still had Castroviejo or Izagirre. One of the tree amigos arent gonna sacrifice himself for the others, so prepare for a lot of blame towards Valverde from commentators (even though he is the last one of those who should attack).

I don't know tomorrow, I fear they are just gonna wait for Huez.

Three leaders is insanity if they aren’t going to be aggressive. It only makes any sense at all if they are going to attack.

Gloating prematurely isn't an attractive action but then being a class act or simply showing a minimal degree of class is something completely foreign to some. Should the race not turn out, as some see it as being already written in stone, I would be curious to see the change in tone of many of these posts. Silvergrenade and this one will likely be on suicide watch in a dark basement somewhere, selling off all of their Sky swag on ebay, lit by only the light from their little laptops.

Agree, but today was really hard to attack with 5 Sky's on the last climb and a headwind. We'll see tomorrow, much shorter stage and much more difficult to control. I think Landa will be on the move...

On a completely random note I would have loved Küng to join Movistar.

I really hope Movistar can get something going tomorrow, I just don’t know if any of the big three are willing to sacrifice for the other two though.

This is where the problem of the parcours comes in, this would have been a great opportunity to attack but as the first stage of the trio of mountain stages there's too much trepidation and riders saving legs. Not to mention that given the characteristics of this stage, the most reasonable attack would have been Valverde, with the steeper final kicks on the Colombière, his descending skills and, as the least likely to win of their three, his comparative expendability enabling Quintana and Landa to save their legs. However, Valverde also didn't have the legs for that today, as we saw, and the team clearly didn't want to burn one of the other two matches.
