Those people here who don't consider Valverde a legend of this era.... Do they even watch cycling?

Both are legends, my friend. Number of hits? I'm not so sure about how it relates to the topic. BigMig is alive and well, Marco is the center of conspiracy theories. I can go on and on...

Indurain, not a legend...the first (only) to win 5 consecutive TdF. Giro-TdF double anyone? Twice. And the feat that lives in history: Luxembourg 1992. That was like Al Capone beating guys to death with a baseball bat.

And many more...

Parts of the discussion about these two don't belong here. But looking at their records as it stand today, they are both legends.

Hits: Hinault has 431,000. And 10,200 on YouTube. The Number 2 ever IMO.

Indurain was a boring rider with no personality or charisma to speak of. He's the kind of cyclist we don't need and he should be forgotten. The fact that someone with only a fraction of his palmares is much more known speaks volumes.

There are quite a few cyclists with tragic deaths (Luis Ocana for example), none of them reached the status of Pantani however. It's not just his tragic death, but his aggressive racing style that made him a legend.

And Hinault was a long time ago, so it's normal that he isn't as prominent on the internet as more recent cyclists. I compared two riders from the same era.

Wow. I don't think I've read a more disappointing statement about a great rider.

Froome is a cyclist that's still active and the internet is much bigger now than it was in the nineties. Ergo they're not comparable.

Fact is that Pantani is objectively more well known than Indurain and they were active during the same era.

You're contradicting yourself. Indurain retired in 1996 when the internet had approximately 35 million users. Pantani retired in 2003 when the internet had approximately 700 million users.

Hey, hey, I have Youtube-hits and you don't, I am therefore legendary and you are not!

This forum gets more and more crazy. The google thing is the most ridiculous way to compare riders. Especially as Pantani had a tempestuous last few years, with expulsions, doping bans, bizarre media appearances and a tragic death accounting for thousands of media coverage than Indurain, who retired back to rural Spain.

So Indurain&Valverde&Froome don't qualify for the legendary status because some people don't like their style
Let's ignore their results as they are boring.
Judging by Google there is only one legend around with 14.400.000 results :D

From those riders in the pole i think Diego Rosa is looking like a good bet.Chaves and Stannard might have a chance too.

Sean Kelly gets nearly 70,000,000 hits. Which I believe makes him about 170 times more legendary than Eddy Merckx.

Nice! Adam Yates is 25 times as legendary as Eddy Merckx as well. Simon Yates is only 80% the legend that Adam is, though. Now we finally know who the better twin is.

Wow, forget cycling. He must be in the running for the most legendary sportsman of all time. Perhaps second only to Brazilian striker 'Fred'.

Well yeah, that's what makes him a legend. That's what makes Ché Guevarra a legend or mythical hero. You know who lived to old age and isn't considered a hero or legend? Fidel Castro. But if he had died around the same time as Ché...

It's not just results, but your lifestyle, personality and racing behavior that determines if you become a legend.
