Tour de Langkawi

01 Nov 2012 08:01

I probably knew about this race about 10 years, long before I followed cycling or knew anything about pro cycling. I remember the start of the stage race was held at the city I was living in, Penang. I remember watching the first few stages of that year and that a stage was neutralised because vehicles were allowed on the road:o
After that I stopped following it, then in 2009 I started watching pro cycling seriously. I believed tour de Langkawi was an absolutely crap race contested by mediocore Asian riders. However, I heard Harmon talking about it and he was mentioning that it was one of the best races in Asia with a monster climb (genting highlands). I have been there and I thought it was a really mild hill and didn't believe what he said. But when I looked at the profile I was shocked. Never would I have believed that malaysia would have such a hard climb with 20km in length. I know it is considered very mild compared to the alps and the pyrenees but it really surprised me.

I also realised that very good riders from the european peloton were competiting in the race and I was shocked by the riders who have won the race
(rujano, serpa, horner, danielson, charteau)
I realised that this was a pretty good race and I have developed an interest in it.
It is also one of the few races near where I live. The other one is the OCBC Singapore criterium but that is a boring flat criterium, although I watched a bit of it on TV and there were good teams like greenEDGE and farnese vini.
I really intend to make the trip to malaysia and watch some real cycling action on the genting highlands one year when I'm free.
It will be a great opportunity for me as it is very hard to watch really good pro cycling live outside areas like europe, australia or USA.
So it really seems like a pretty nice race to me so lets have a discussion on this race.
And tell me what you know and like about this race.:)

I like it because Serpa owns it.

Course for 2013 is supposed to have a couple more interesting stages in addition to the Genting and Cameron MTFs.

Wonder how long before the live coverage comes.

Really wow that will be pretty awesome with cameron highlands:eek:
Been there before too but do you know how hard is the climb?
I remember cameron highlands has a pretty high altitude.
Well I think there was live coverage when I was living in malaysia quite a few years ago. I think it is on the local tv, or cable can't remember.

It's not as hard as Genting, 20km @ 5% or something.

I hope Meyer/ Morton (either themselves or for Weening/ Steitna) can go well here, along with Goos.

Rolland looks as if he will be the best climber here but Monsalve will go well hopefully.

It will be cool to see how MTN go too.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong

The Grand Boucle wasn't just Europe's for the taking.

Rolland said he wanted to win, but don't like his early form.

Rolland ftw I guess, although he has a habit of being crap outside of the TDF.
Also rooting for Meyer, Morton and Goos.

Will be an intresting race. Bos/Guardini show off somehow is very amusing to me as well. :D

Schnaidt will be the biggest threat to Guardini.

You'd think so, wouldn't you.
ProCycling (the magazine) did a ranking of climbs a couple of years ago, and Genting was in the top-5. Almost every pro that has done it says it's incredibly hard: For one it's rather long (especially for that time of the year), and, more importantly, it's in Malaysia. Tropical temperatures, VERY humid conditions.
Don't underestimate Genting.

Always looking forward to this race, where the Europeans mix with the Asians, and some Africans come to play as well.

@simo1733: I can see him doing a top-10, but I can also see him being completely invisible. Let's hope for the best.
