    Etna

Its highly unlikely that the conditions near an eruption of that size are any worse than cycling through a polluted/industrialised city (unless cycling through an active ash cloud, where it would be like a very very dusty day - a simple cloth around the face would negate 95% of the effect of the...

    Vino Comeback Thread

I believe that Vinokourov rode a criterium type race in the states in 2002/3? It was in San Fransisco and went up some stupidly steep climb repeatedly. It was way back pre T-mobile when the Telekom kit was just pink and black. There is a photo in a back issue of cycle sport somewhere.

Has The Sub 8 Hour Stage

there was a stage in the 2000 tdf which was 249k to briancon which took about 8hrs (went over the izoard and others iirc). was pretty awesome...

Best current rider without a winning weapon?

I agree that he doesnt want to be more than a slave. But he was only 62 seconds slower than Basso on the ITT to Kronoplatz in this years Giro. He also usually makes it up at least 3/4ths of the climb before pulling off. In the dauphine libere he also did pretty well, he was there with Contador...

    98th Tour de France presentation

The stage to the galibier looks brutal. The climb/descent to Pinerolo wasnt that where DiLuca won in 2009 Giro? SuperBesse is also quite good, but they need to have more small climbs to finishes like SuperBesse, Mur de Bretagne etc. And a long flat TT into a headwind (or a 60km 1000m+ climbing...

    Best Climber (2000's)

gratuitous video of the the stage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q38Gyjv4EE&feature=related Makes it look a lot closer than I remember but then it was 10 years ago! having watched that I think Armstrong could have got the stage and probably have gapped Pantani to the tune of 5-10 seconds or...

    Best Climber (2000's)

Ventoux in 2000 he just went and dropped all bar Pantani, I think he could have dropped him if he wanted to- look how easily he closed the gap to Pantani that Pantani had laboured to open, but eased off a little. Luz Ardiden was spectacular but that second "surge" was almost certainly due to...

    Best Climber (2000's)

What I'm trying to get across (badly) is that your traditional climber (i.e. Escartin, Rasmussen, Pantani etc) would happily launch a series of accelerations to blow away the peleton, but could rarely hold the same pace all the way to the line, likewise they would often attack with several...

    Best Climber (2000's)

With the exception of Sestriere did he ever accelerate more than once? Admittedly he didn't need to accelerate any more but unlike Jiminez or Pantani (to some extent) he didn't accelerate slow down a little and accelerate again all the way up the mountain. He (Armstrong) kicked and just flew up...

    Best Climber (2000's)

Armstrong wasnt a pure climber but he time trialed faster up the mountains than anyone. I wish we had seen him on a crazy climb (Zoncolan, Mortirolo, Angliru etc). Of those listed Rasmussen. But I voted other (Armstrong).

    Best Climber (1990's)

Pantani at his best was sublime, and no one could touch him. Jiminez was great but sporadic. Both are hugely missed.

    Mountain Team Time Trial

Further to the above post it was the 2004 Tour of the Med with a ttt up Mount Faron. CSC won... http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2004/feb04/med04/med045 Sad that I can remember that :/

    Mountain Team Time Trial

They tried a team time trial up a mountain in one of the early season races a couple of years back in early 00's. IIRC it was the tour of the med, blew the race to pieces. I think they had a flat section then the climb, and 5 team members had to be together at the bottom of the climb then...
