If memory serves me most of his crashes have been in the peloton - not when he is out front and on his own. -

Both his first 2 Tour stages were descent finishes. Galibier from the breakaway, Aubisque from the GC group

He won his first Tour stage by dropping Contador on the Galibier, but his second Tour stage he won by attacking the Aubisque descent.
