Is it possible Pidcock was not good enough? After all, Pogacar did the majority of the riding in the group.

Yeah, sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. He used the correct tactic to have a chance to win.

I'll answer.... if Vingegaard does not beat Remco here, it is bad news for TDF competition. He will not beat Pogacar.
