Teams & Riders The official Egan Bernal is the new Egan Bernal thread

Well, I am also hoping that this is just bad form or/and the Borgus crash affecting him, but it not looking good. If it is really his back than the team should consider shutting him down for the season. A lower top 10 finish in the vuelta will not do him any good. I fear that Bernal will end...

Vuelta a España Vuelta a España 2021: Stage 9 (Puerto Lumbreras - Alto de Velefique, 188.0 km)

While we can all agree that quite a few of the presumed podium candidates (Bernal, Landa, Carapaz, ) are not at their absolute best, we should not hold that against Roglic, Mas, MAL or speak of a "weak field" It virtually never happens that all GC riders reach top shape in time at the same GT...

Oh, I was not aware of that. I was referring to the years I spend in LA in the mid-2010s when they held big market shares and their advertising was almost omnipresent. That would change the outlook quiet a bit even though south American are a natural fit on Spanish speaking teams regardless.

Vuelta a España Vuelta a España 2021: Stage 3 (Santo Domingo de Silos - Picón Blanco, 202.8 km)

I also find it hard to get a read on this stage. We do not often see such a hard MTF this early. I am unsure about the form of more than a couple GC riders: -Roglic looks really good, but I would like to see him in one hard mountain stage just to be sure that he has fully recovered - Bernal has...

Teams & Riders The Great Big Cycling Transfers, Extensions, and Rumours Thread

Probably a good decision. Since Latin America is a crucial market for Movistar ( the company) there will always be pressure for the team to have a marquee rider from the region under contract. MAL has disappointed so far but that was in large part probably due to crashes, getting used to the new...

    Vuelta a España 76th La Vuelta ciclista a España 2021 (August 14 - September 5)

Yes, a few riders building towards week might have a rough awakening. If Yates ( who did not look great in Burgos) and Bernal are still somewhat affected by the crash than the Carapaz might be the one to profit.

I don't see how that changes anything. The back- up plan for Roglic surely also was in place. This isn't the Danish football team returning from their vacation destinies on short notice to compete in that miracle European Championship they won.

Sorry, but it does not work that way. Different year, different parcour, different circumstances. So a cross-reference to this year's Tour are to be treated as academic at best. Without in-depth analysis of power data etc. it is anybody's guess if a rider really managed to reach peak form. We...

Carapaz also was a late addition to the vuelta after Ineos lost faith in Froome. He had also ridden the Tour in particular during the last week as he went stage hunting on 3 days and tried for the poka dot while finishing just outside the top 10. Nobody is suggesting that Roglic was at his...

    Vuelta a España 76th La Vuelta ciclista a España 2021 (August 14 - September 5)

I also have Roglic as No.2 GT-rider in the world but I assume the difference between no.1 and no.2 to be a lot bigger than between Roglic and the next group of riders. I just consider Pogacar to be in a tier all by himself and he would be my favorite on pretty much any type of mountain stage and...

    Vuelta a España 76th La Vuelta ciclista a España 2021 (August 14 - September 5)

In defense of Bernal, I think those week 3 Giro struggles are a bit overstated. He had one really bad day that was in part caused by him not riding smart on going into the red too early. After that he did exactly what he said: ride under control and use the time for his advantage. During the...

Almost certainly. He did not start for stage 4 and I guess we now know that it was more than precaution. I think this is a huge blow as Martinez has proven that he has no qualms about doing the hard work despite being a world class climber himself. Still a very strong team obviously.

Obviously Roglic will be the clear favorite, but I am still cautiously optimistic that this will be the closest GT of the year. Maybe not an instant classic like last year but tense until at least stage 17/18 nontheless. As brilliant as Roglic is, he is no Pogacar in that he dominates every...

    Richard Carapaz discussion thread

Well after rereading my last post, I have to concur that my tone was unnecessarily harsh and rather detrimental to the point I was trying to make. Therefore I offer you my apology, Netserk and hope you accept. I don't think that your perception of cycling is generally any more simple than...
