Yeah, maybe. But what if they caught a UAE doing it? Or even Pogacar? You think they’d publicly denounce them? Or do you think they’d just give them a warning to knock it off? Or even let it slide? Again, I find it somewhat naive to think that riders who biologically dope would think it beyond...

Oh look. There are consequences for allowing one person and team to dominate. Pogacar is eating cycling and the public literally aren’t buying it. Particularly significant is the fall of viewing figures in traditional cycling countries. They know the sport and they don’t like what they’re...

As I’ve said before, any comparisons of Pogacar to Froome/Wiggins, of now to then, are weakened by the fact that cycling just looked and felt different back then. Totally clean, no of course not. Gianetti and co were still tinkering for instance. But overall everyone of the top guys were pretty...

Rozman is a side show and merely further circumstantial evidence that UAE are at it. In any event, any rider in a team managed by Gianetti and which is dominating the entire cycling calendar should expect to be asked questions on doping every day of the week and twice on Sunday. The failure of...

Yeah exactly. It’s like comparing a kid messing about with fireworks and bottle rockets to NASA. ‘But they’re the same, they both had a space programme.’ Ffs.

No motor today. Makes a difference, doesn’t it?

Let’s be honest, everyone who loves cycling is just relieved Pogacar didn’t win for once today. Wout did us all a massive favour and allowed us to enjoy a race again. Brilliant to see.

    And I can guess why!

Very possible, although I think it just as likely that Gianetti told Pogacar to reel it in a bit and let some other riders have their day in the sun. Arensman was the guy who happened to grab his opportunity. Either way, Pogacar’s more conservative rides over the last few days have been down to...

Again, no amount of doping or breathing CO or anything else that improves delivery and absorption of oxygen explains much of what Pogacar is doing. For example, the seated attacks that deliver huge accelerations on steep inclines - sometimes very steep inclines.

Agreed. His face was frozen like a sphinx when he realised what the question was. Very uneasy. You could almost hear the wheels in his brain trying to remember what the lawyers told him to say. Interestingly he didn’t deny knowing the parties involved.

I definitely think there are simmering tensions at the top of the sport as regards Pogacar and UAE, a fair amount of fear and loathing. As regards what UAE are actually up to, it might only take one journalist to put it all together. Or for maybe some sponsors, worrying about what they're...

I don't think attacking a rider for their personality or charisma is particularly useful. Their public persona is only a small part of what they are in total. Certainly GC contenders need to be able to lead teams and therefore get buy-in from their team mates. Also, they might be more relaxed in...

Yes I know, I was merely exaggerating for effect. But it’s a valid point, especially in an era of greater specialisation. No one else replicates what he does. Maybe Remco, but unlike Pogacar he gives every impression of being supremely talented but quite human. Great at some things, merely good...

Great post. His classics performances are startling. Like he’s become the greatest classics rider of all time out of nowhere. How does such a relatively light guy generate that amount of power? The ability to just cycle away from an entire peloton at will. Or accelerate up extreme inclines...
