10 speed shifters with 9 speed cassette and derailleur??

I am upgrading an older road bike to a 9 speed with a triple in the front and was given a brand new set of 10 speed Ultegra Sti Brake Lever Shifters. I wanted to use a 9 speed Ultegra cassette and derailleur with these shifters. Looking on another forum I found someone who said that a set of 10 speed Ultegra shifters should work with my 9 speed gear as long as I use the alternate b position for the cable on my rear derailleur. I then called Shimano and spoke with a rep who after consulting some other workers agreed that the 10 should work with the 9 gear but wasn’t sure exactly how it is done and said that there is no official literature explaining this process on the Shimano site.

So my question is, has anyone tried to do this and if so can you give me any tips or explain the process. Thanks for your help.

If you attach the shifter cable to the oppisite of the clamp on the rear derallieur it will change the pull ratio ang my work. You should really splash out and buy a 10spd block and chain.

another trick that I used for most of last season was running a 740x Dura Ace RD (different pull ratio than current shimano mechs) with 10sp shifters & a 9 speed cassette/chain. Worked perfectly for the entire season. I still have the der laying about somewhere if you're interested...

Also, for years I have used jtek shiftmate to run campy ergo 10 speed levers with Shim dura ace drivetrain. 9 sp (after having several ultegra and dace shifters fail over many years.) So 10 to 9 you get less 10 speed lever reach pull yet greater gap distance forgiveness of 9 speed in the back. Easy to do and when neccesary simply (every couple of years or so) rebuild right shifter in about 30 minutes. All campy levers are triple compatible vs shim.
