I seem to remember a rumour going around that the GdL was changing finish town away from Como. Not sure if this is 2011 or 2012. Any ideas? I've googled exhaustively to no avail. Thanks

Race Radio said:They changed it last year. They added two more climbs after the descent of the Ghisallo. Harder course.

The Giro di Lombardia course will change yet again... This time they'll finish in Lecco(south of the Como lake)
They really don't want Phil to win huh![]()
Michielveedeebee said:Yeah, but is it harder or easier ?
El Pistolero said:Don't know, I hope it's harder.
Ssshh, you're trying to apply logic to El Pistolero's posts, that's pointless. The Hitch said:You dont know what the change is, but you do know the motivation behind it is to stop Gilbert from winning?

Lombardy has changed its route many times, going back to before Gilbert was born.El Pistolero said:Yes, they want an Italian winning a big classic desperately in Italy.
The course was the same for years until an Italian stopped winning
Phil was always going to win Lombardia with that tricky descend they added last year. He's twice the descender Nibali is. I don't mind a change, but it does destroy a reputation of a classic. You don't see other Monuments changing their route every year because it's that route that makes them a Monument.
The first edition was 1905. It was then called Milan-Milan. It gained its current name in 1907. The route has changed many times. Milan, Sesto San Giovanni, Bergamo, Varese, Monza, Cuneo have been start or finish place. In 2004 the race started in Mendrisio in Switzerland, and ended in Como.

The Hitch said:Hes also twice the sprinter of Cavendish, twice the tter that Cancellara is and twice the climber of Contador right?
Oh wait Contador is our other favourite rider. Scrap that one then.
Prudehomme did probably change the Tour de France route in 2011 from the 2010 one because he didnt want Contador to win again. And it worked. Why has Verbier not appeared in the Tour since 2009. Did you ever think of that folks?

El Pistolero said:Prudhomme never hid it behind banks of why he makes chances. He has openly admitted to put in less time trials to give Andy Schleck a chance to battle for the maillot Jaune and also admitted he changed the rules of the green jersey to favor Mark Cavendish.
This happens all the time in cycling, why are you so surprised?
During the 70s the Tour boss also admitted to create stages that didn't suit Eddy Merckx in the hope that he didn't win. It's part of cycling's history.
As for the descending part, did you see the descend of the Tourmalet and the Aubisque this Tour? It took Sanchez a while to catch upAnd I rate him higher than Nibali as well.
The guys who draw out the profile of races aren't neutral and never will be![]()
The Hitch said:Dont want to stretch the thread too far from its original purpose, but one way to look at it is that Nibali easily moved to and away from Contador on the Giro descents. And on the Tour descents, the best descender was that very same Alberto Contador.
I don't read Italian either, but they seem to be talking about Gilbert as a great champion who they want to see at the start...El Pistolero said:http://www.gazzetta.it/Ciclismo/27-07-2011/giro-lombardia-arrivo-lecco-802208026824.shtml
Here's a longer article, but they say nothing about the course it self. I'm guessing it's to do with the fact they sacked Zomegnan and the new bosses want to make some chances. Which leads me to believe it will be easier, because Zomegnan liked to make things harder.
They're going to finish on a racing track or something, though someone who speaks Italian should come and translate it.

I'm not sure which Italian riders they could possibly favour over Gilbert. Anything which suits Cunego, Nibali or Scarponi will be OK for Phil.
Parrulo said:cept a real mountain near the end
put anything similar to 10k with 8%+ of average incline in the last 50k and gilbert is out of contention.
Michielveedeebee said:And Purito suddenly becomes the main contender![]()
I don't know if that's possible in that area - maybe someone else would know.Parrulo said:cept a real mountain near the end
