2011 Vuelta a Espana Stage 5: Sierra Nevada - Valdepenas de Jaen, 186km (24/8)

A hilly stage with a tough finish. La Vuelta came to this finish last year with a specatacular stage. The great Spaniard Igor Anton won with defending Champion Nibali not far behind in 2nd.

Stage 4 Results
1 ANTON HERNANDEZ, Igor (Euskaltel - Euskadi) 5h 00' 29"
2 NIBALI, Vincenzo (Liquigas - Doimo) + 1"
3 VELITS, Peter (HTC - Columbia)
4 RODRIGUEZ OLIVER, Joaquin (Katusha)
5 GILBERT, Philippe (OmegaPharma - Lotto) + 5"
6 VAN GARDEREN, Tejay (HTC - Columbia) + 8"
7 MOSQUERA MIGUEZ, Ezequiel (Xacobeo - Galicia) + 12"
8 ROCHE, Nicolas (Ag2r - La Mondiale)
9 PLAZA MOLINA, Ruben (Caisse d'Epargne)
10 URAN URAN, Rigoberto (Caisse d'Epargne) + 19"

GC riders will need to be right up the front and won't want to lose time on this very tough finish. Their is a wall 500m before the finish at 27% which will rip the legs of everyone and open some massive time gaps.

Long circuit, they are actually passing the finish earlier, but it's at 75km so we will not see it :(

Looking forward to this almost more than today's stage. Purito will not fail like he did 12 months ago.

This video shows just how steep the wall is, and the awesome Purito Shark Velits 3 way sprint shot.

Im amazed Uran managed to stay on his bike with such ease while climbing it.

The fact that neither of those 3 won, but rather, Anton from behind, suggests that going full on that climb would be a mistake, and saving energy for the final 500m is key.

Though i dont know how much slipstream one can get on a 27% bit.

that was a great finish last year, one of the best of any race the whole year.

the speed they were going up there is a slipstream 27% or not. Also there is a big psychological effect in having wheels to follow and someone to chase which defies physics.

Is that really 27%? it might be a spot max gradient rather than 27% for real any distance

Edit that graph suggests it is about 200m ish - more than enough to create a worthwhile timegap

i think purito will smoke this stage

Yeah, since Anton is clearly struggling, and I doubt he'll regain form this quickly..... That will be two in a row for Katusha.

A good one for J-Rod, unless a break goes. Surely Quick Step would see their best chance of defending red being to make it the GC men, however - most of them would need to win the stage and beat Chavanel home by 30+ seconds.

Antón will hopefully have timed form for the second and third weeks, so it will be a case of managing losses again, and hopefully he won't be too far adrift when we get to the serious stuff later on. If not, then Mikel Nieve to make it 3 queen stages out of 3 and win on Angliru. Wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Madrazo have a go, but Movistar are likely reduced to stage hunting for the rest of the race unless Pardilla is on storming form - he does like it when it's hot. Again, I'll tip David López to have a go, Cobo, Albasini, Barredo and Lövkvist as people who could, if they get in the right position, get up in the mix too.

Everyone thought one year ago that Purito would smoke the stage after the show the day before in Málaga where he trailed Gilbert. He'll be at the front for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if he fails again.

timed form?

He was about the 50th best climber today. That's not just a form issue.

Quite right.

When you are talking about one of the best climbers in the world being dropped by the likes of Talansky, a talent but also a neo-pro coming to the Vuelta expressly with no ambitions apart from getting some experience in his legs and fetching bottles, then it's not about delaying a peak till later in the race.

Getting dropped by an elite group of the best dozen contenders could potentially be an off day or the result of not yet peaking. Getting dropped by more than 40 guys is a different order of problem.

Let's wait for word from the Euskaltel camp. Remember when Basso was sick one day in the 2005 Giro and lost half an hour, but when he recovered he stomped everyone in the high mountains? Or Santí Pérez in 2004, who went from utter mediocrity, to finishing 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 4th on the final week mountain stages, then topping it off with 1st in the time trial to finish (OK, not the best role model to follow)?

Antón blows hot and cold. When he's on it, he's one of the best climbers in the world, bar none. When he's off it, he can be truly dreadful. I guess he's somewhere between José Rujano and Denis Menchov. Mercurial, super-talented, hard to pin down.

I'm thinking Dan Martin will be right in the mix at the finish only to be beaten by Purito..Hoping big time for a Martin win. Though in saying that, the profile of the stage looks quite conducive for a breakaway to have a chance of staying away. Can't wait

The finish kind of reminds me a bit of the Emilia finish(obviously not as steep) but a finish in which Dan Martin can excel on
