SUMMARY
Game Open: Monday June 25 2012
Game Link: http://game.cqmanager.net/
Deadline: Saturday June 30 9:00am CET
Riders: 9
Buying Power: 4000 points

GAME
This game is open to anyone! Just go to our websiteand create account. TEAMS
Each player must select 9 participating riders. The buying power is 4000 per team. The rider cost will be again based on "Current CQ Ranking" value as of June 24 2012.

In a case that selected rider did not start the race, the rider will be replaced with a rider from a same team with nearest (same or lower) value.

Example:
You chose: SCHLECK Fränk at 1151
Replacement: CANCELLARA Fabian at 997

So far those riders are: (more may be added as the teams are announced)
VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro
ASTARLOZA CHAURREAU Mikel

Question is how much buying power do we want? Suggestions were to increase the buying power from 3000 to 4000.

All suggestions and feedback is appreciated! Also looking for somebody to help with daily updates as I may not be able to do it because of family vacation.

A lot of people could benefit from riders who aimed at the tour last year, yet then crashed out and that led them to relatively low CQ scores.
Of the top of my head i can come up with 3 genuine contenders all who would cost around 2000.
Still I would enjoy it better if the budget was raised slightly as to allow for more high profile names to feature.

I voted for 3500.

There isn't really any mathematical analysis behind. I just think that a slightly higher budget will make the game a little bit more interesting both because riders will be a bit more expensive than in the Giro and because we'll probably see more diverse teams then.

Current scores:

Wiggins 1915
Sanchez 1708
Voeckler 1550
Evans 1464
Martin 1437
Nibali 1284
Leipheimer 1041
A. Schleck 815
Van den Broeck 765
Valverde 700?
Peraud 690
Menchov 545

Could be a lot of similar looking teams regardless of the budget. My idea which i suspect won't be popular is to force every team to select a leader with a score of 1000+ from their total budget. This is the only way i see to have good variety between the squads.

How can this be done? Simple, highlight the rule, then if you don't select at least one rider with a value of over 1000 your team gets deleted.

Analysing last years starters as priced on the CQ update of 26 June 2011 (this is before any alteration according to Contador's penalty), the team values were:

THR 6269
LEO 6130
GRM 5286
OLO 5173
VCD 5157
RAB 4903
SBS 4586
SKY 4343
RSH 4207
MOV 4026
LAM 3482
QST 3254
EUC 3060
AST 3026
ALM 3015
COF 3005
EUS 2792
FDJ 2667
KAT 2286
BMC 2271
SAU 2235
LIQ 1629

We could have bought the 6th most important squad for the Giro.

The average cost per rider is 50% higher than for the recent Giro. There were still 34 riders available at less than 100 points, but there were 50 for the Giro, and 20 men at more than 1000, as opposed to just 2 at the Giro.

The average spend we were allowed for the Giro would have bought the 57th most expensive rider in that race: the 57th most expensive in last years Tour cost 489 points, and 9x489=4401.

The quartiles of the Giro riders' values were 89, 188 and 374: last year's Tour quartiles were 134, 295 and 499. Our average spend per rider in the Giro (3000/9) was 20% above average cost: 20% above average cost in last years Giro would be 502.2 points per rider, or 4520 for a team of 9.

Assuming this year's Tour rider costs are comparable to last years, we will need a budget of at least 4500 to compete at a comparable level to that enjoyed in the Giro.

Great work Armchair!
On one hand I feel like increasing the limit to those 4500 however on the other hand I feel like the increased buying power would allow everybody to get those obvious GC picks as that was the way to go with the Giro game so if the buying power is lower we all will have to be more creative. Unfortunately again, the lower buying power would eliminate some exciting riders ...

Lets see what others have to say :D

CQM

Since a lot of the top riders will cost more (some, significantly more) post Dauphine/ToS and considering the current cost of these riders, I've gone for 4,000.
However, I had originally thought 3,500, too.

It's a fine balance.

The game is best played with all the top favourites being affordable and thus having the riders most likely to score heavily and be involved in the action, in our teams.

However, too many points will makes the same top selections automatic and dilute the "skill" element from the selection process.

4,000 points should allow players to select one or two tier riders and a reasonable variety of support riders, the odd dark horse etc.

Among the GC favourites there is unlikely to be a major net movement in terms of cost. There is a chance for some riders to gain points but riders like Wiggins are far more likely to either remain at the same value or become cheaper (defending a win at the Dauphine).

Also, based on some primitive number crunching 3500 would be the least desirable budget in terms of avoiding homogeneity (teams being too similar ;)).

I'd advocate keeping the budget lowish, although I haven't voted yet. Reason: real teams have a lot of unused points tied up in domestiques, so you could achieve the score of the top real team with a smaller budget. Also the difficulty just makes for a better game. Maybe 3500 will make it a bit harder relative to the Giro game, where I was able to pick 4+ GC leaders (picked totally the wrong ones though :p)

Fine with leaving it as it is but i voted for 3500, give a little extra to compensate for the rise in general prices. The danger of having it too high is that there's less risk involved when taking a big favourite, with the Giro you could have taken a big favourite but then you'd have to compensate by picking inferior cheaper riders where its complete pot luck if the score well or not. That said, reading some people's opinion 4k wouldn't be that extreme I think. Would the Vuelta be back down to 3000?

I think we need enough points to have a team where at least half the riders are competitive where some can either "challenge" in sprints and some can compete on GC rather than just having 2 quality riders and 7 hopeful lucky dip riders. I'd like the game to increase my enjoyment of the race so I'm guessing we'll need close to 4500 points.

I haven't voted in the poll because I didn't take part in the Giro game. I would, however, very much like to join in a Tour game.

However, could I ask how many of the top 10 in the Giro version picked Hesjedal? If it's a lot, then isn't it possible that a low budget means that the real question being asked in the game is simply 'who will win it'?

A bigger budget would allow for more than one GC pick and some solid sprinters/breakaway guys as well. Along with, of course the 'wild cards' that should really make the difference.

But do take this with a pinch of salt - I'm terrible at these sorts of games anyway!!! :)

Rodriguez earned more points in the Giro than Hesjedal did, so it is not just about getting the pink/yellow jersey.

All of the top 20+ picked Hesjedal, but they all spent the other 2300 odd points in their budget differently, and that's why some won and others finished in the 20s or below.

I dont see anything about the tdf when i log in

The game will open on Monday. So far we have only 120 riders confirmed and more CQ points are being awarded from the Nationals so the current CQ values will be slightly different from those posted above. I just dont want anybody to select a team now and go over the 4000 points limit in case some of the riders will gain points before the TDF start.

Otherwise it is all ready to go :)
