Anybody know anything about this race? It's been around for half a century and apparently Rui Costa, Fabian Cancellara, and Alexander Kristoff are all going to be there, so it's got that going for it anyway.

15 circuits of a 12.1 km circuit (totalling 181.5 km), through town, out over the hill, through town, out over the hill, repeat...

Never followed the race before.
But from the race site ( http://www.gippingen.ch/web/ ), it would appear this is a 4 day combination event.

Interestingly, today's article about Tom Boonen's possible Tour de France participation includes a quote from him at the end which seems to indicate that he's going to be in this race. But nothing I've seen--not even the official race website--lists Omega Pharma-Quick-step as being scheduled to send a team.

Interesting to compare that start list to Tour de Suisse and see who is and isn't going straight from this race to the WT race.

This is an interesting field. Those poor Team Switzerland kids are going to get eaten alive I guess, but they're probably just happy to be there.

I suppose it would be foolish to bet against Albasini given his history here, but you have to figure who else, Kristoff and Gilbert maybe, will figure in the finish?

That said, my tip for the winner is Tom-Jelte Slagter. He hasn't raced since his impressive performances in the Ardennes Classics, though, is there some critical news item about him I've overlooked?

Going with Chernetckii.
Inspired by Trofimov.

I wonder about the spelling of that guy's name. Procyclingstats.com gives it as you have (and spell his first name Sergei), whereas cqranking.com and Wikipedia have him as Sergey Chernetskiy. I guess the different sources use different methods of anglicizing Russian names.

How come I hadn't heard of this race? .HC ranked, very strong list of teams, so e big names, a fifty year history and an interesting parcours!

Is it one for a sprinter who can climb? Or for a puncheur?

Race has recently been upgraded.

Last few winners:
2013 ALBASINI Michael
2012 LAGUTIN Sergey
2011 ALBASINI Michael
2010 VANDEWALLE Kristof
2009 VELITS Peter
2008 MONDORY Lloyd

Kristoff might be able to win this, not sure.

Has anyone looked for a ticker or other live coverage of this race? Well, looked for and found, I mean, I looked and failed to find anything before I posted this.

You can get about one update an hour on twitter. It's like the race is top secret.

Anyway, Kluge, Zilioli, Schir have 5.40 with 66km to go. MTN leading the chase.

Lead went down to 3:40 with 48km to go. Latest report is that the peloton is rapidly closing and the gap is down to 2:40 with 40kmto go.

If the peloton is going fast it could shell out the sprinters who can climb a bit.

Good for the Switzerland team's young Thery Schir for getting up into the break!

Seems to be the not so young Mirco Saggiorato (26 years old)...not that it matters though:)
