2015 Tour de France CQ game

And here we go again:

Rules
Team of exactly nine riders. Teams with fewer riders will be filled out with cheapest riders available (if two or more riders are the joint cheapest, the rider whose name comes first alphabetically shall be used). If quota of nine cannot be reached in this manner (eg, 8 riders totalling exactly 4000, no free riders starting race) team will be disqualified.

Riders selected who do not start the Tour, or who are excluded from the game because of a ban (see below) will be replaced, if it is possible within budget, by the next most expensive from their own team, otherwise as above.

Where a team has nine riders but is over budget, the cheapest rider whose price is at least equal to the overspend, will be replaced according to the same principle.

Teams with more than 9 riders will have their most expensive pick(s) removed from their squad.

Budget
4000 points (as has been the case on the three previous versions of this game)

Price of riders
CQ current score as at 28th June, with points accumulated over 12 months leading up to that date, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 29th will be considered definitive.

There is a spreadsheet at dropbox here that might help you compile your team.

Rider eligibility
All riders selected to ride are eligible for the game, no special arrangements for anyone coming off a ban (this is a change from previous years).

Submitting your team
By personal message to me.

PLEASE use the CQ format for names (surname then first name, nothing else at all): it makes an enormous difference to the time it takes to log teams.

I shall endeavour to have my team ready on the first day after the price list is released and submit it to the first to submit a team so that there can be confidence that I didn't pick from among the best of everyone else's ideas.

Deadline

Saturday 4th July at whatever is the time of the first rider on the ramp for the prologue (2pm French time, 1pm BST, noon UTC: work it out from there if you are outside Europe)

Scoring

Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT1). Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

at last, the next game! thank you AC for starting this one.

4000 is really unfair, especially when Contador is hunting for the double :-(

(correction: i can put Contador, but it is becoming a huge risk betting on just one rider)

Thanks a lot Armchair!

Got a 10th at the Giro version at my first go. Will find out if that was luck or judgement. I imagine the competition will be a bit tougher!

I suppose it could come down to which of the big four you select?

The definitive price list has now been made available, the selector sheet is up and running (and I will try to update it with team changes when I can), my team has been lodged with the earliest entrant, and the competition is officially open.

Good luck to all.

20 teams in so far (listed in the OP): about 40 hours to go.

So far there are 55 different riders chosen: 2 are on more than 3/4 of teams, another 2 on 50-75%, and 10 more in at least a quarter of the selections.

30 unique picks on the spreadsheet at the moment.

And one team is making the Collective Wisdom team irrelevant: at present it is impossible to make a team within budget that has a higher popularity score than the selection than one manager submitted.

Don't forget to send your teams before the race starts: details in the OP. Good luck to all.

Just submitted my team. Interestingly I found it easier than choosing the riders for the Giro squad.
I think two riders will feature at almost every team and a third one at more than half the teams.

And again a big thank you to Armchair_cyclist for putting up the game.

Your team was fine, as are all the others logged so far (some after necessary adjustment). Good to have some new entrants, especially as the revamp of the forum has driven away many previous regulars, so you are very welcome.

44 teams in (see OP for list), still an hour for any last minute submissions.

Thanks AC!

Am stubbornly sticking with my policy of having no riders from the season game. Worked fairly well at the Giro, but I think I might have missed out on a few easy points from the following this time round - Gesink, Kudus, Cavendish, Stannard, Porte, Jungels, Konig, either Yates, and Boom. May the best squad win!

Team popularity ranking

Talanski will get 38 points for your team in this ranking, any unique pick is worth 1. Bear in mind that the Collective Wisdom team has a popularity ranking of 199: some of these are very close to that.

Tactics

All 4 of the big favourites were selected, but most managers found Contador and Nibali rather too expensive.

Quintana and Froome however, were very popular, not just individually but as a pair: 25 teams have decided that, at least in terms of this game, they don't need to pick between them for who will do best.

Teams arranged according to riders selected who cost more than twice the average budget (883 points or more)

Quintana and Froome Armchair Cyclist, asdfgh101, Del1962, Diggercuz, DJW, GeraintTooFast, Hakkie2, Handbrake, Hugo87, Kabete, LosBrolin, Mellow_Velo, Minessa, NairoQ, Postmanhat, Shalgo, The Sceptic, Tuart
Quintana, Froome and Cavendish Blues in the Bottle, L29205, Leadbelly, Search, Yellow Knight
Quintana, Froome and Van Garderen Amis Velo
Quintana, Froome and Uran Commodo

Quintana and Nibali Crevaison, Rote Laterne

Quintana and Contador Murali

Quintana and Rodriguez LightBing
Quintana, Bardet and Cavendish Just Some Guy
Quintana and Cavendish Claudio Capucchino, Murrjt, Scrooll07
Quintana only Jancouver

Froomeand Cavendish JosephD, Togo95, USPostal
Froomeand Matthews Josedin
Froome only: Joelsim, Vladimir

And some eschewed the big four entirely:
D Martin and Cavendish Midge
Cavendish Bicycle Boy
Sagan Trudgin
Gallopin Mr Hender

Stage One
No-one had Dennis or Tony Martin, and most of us have none of the top ten today, but the Guaranteed Points leaderboard is underway:
1= USPostal and Joelsim 35 (Cancellara)
3 JosephD 7 (Brandle and Kelderman)
4 BicycleBoy 5 (Brandle)
5= GeraintTooFast , Hakkie2, LosBrolin, Minessa, Postmanhat, Shalgo, ClaudioCappucchino, Murrjt, Scrooll07, Jancouver, Togo95, Vladimir (Kelderman)

I expected that Talansky, Quintana and Froome (in that order) will be the most popular picks.

I'm quite happy that only Crevaison also picked Nibali, more reason to cheer for him.

Went for an all-mountain team. Looking to my closest matches (anyone knows a way to find most similar teams?) it might come down to the smaller picks. In that case, it's Ten Dam and Navarro that have to do well for me. Bit sad that I didn't pick Arrendondo, but I usually go in overdrive with Colombians, so I decided to go in underdrive with him for once. (This can only turn out bad ;) )

Happy with the team, confident about my riders and for once I didnt really want to make a change after looking at all teams, except for maybe trying to get Arrendondo in, but even that is not something I'm certain about. I'll cheer for him anyway. Good luck and lots of fun everyone!

Can't the Collective Wisdom team be marginally improved by selecting Gesink and Bennett instead of Kelderman and Navarro?

My mistake: I should have boldened Gesink instead of the more expensive Kelderman. That leaves 279 for the 9th man, which is not enough for Bennett. Thanks for drawing the error to my attention.

Most people have gone for a climber/GC team.

Cavendish has a decent number of picks, but Sagan and Matthews only have one each, and Kristoff and Greipel are omitted entirely. Some very 3rd division sprinters have been selected purely because of cheapness, but that was not, I suspect, in much expectation of returns,

I know that fancy programmes and macros exist for comparing teams, but here is the game spreadsheet to stage 1: you could simply add 1000 points to the riders in your team in the Rider Scores page on, for example, the stage 5 column, and then see the result on the Results page. That will show who shares most of your team.

Woops, after making my team in the spread sheet I totally forgot to PM Armchair the team. Is it possible for you to include the team with a massive asterisk (hence not part of the competition obviously), or do I have to keep track myself?

Apparently I'm that lazy and would like to be able to compare easily after each update... :-*

This was my selected riders:

FROOME Chris
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander
KELDERMAN Wilco
BENNETT Sam
GESINK Robert
TALANSKY Andrew
DE GENDT Thomas
KUDUS GHEBREMEDHIN Merhawi
WYSS Marcel

(It should be obvious to anyone that I'm not cheating seing the above team :)
