We're getting closer and closer to the big stuff. One (transition) stage away from the Pyrenees. The Vuelta has done a decent job on designing hilly stages this year (especially for Vuelta standards), though they robbed us from a real good one here. At the presentation, the stage was announced like this:

Instead the peloton dodges some really tough hills (Urbia is 2km at 10,5% at the end and Otxondo 3km at 9-10% at the start) for some rolling ones, and does a much bigger loop through France.

The break not making it today was kind of a surprise, but if the sprinters want a chance here, they sure have to make their teams work themselves instead of hopping on the Astana train.

Super tricky corner btw in the final k:

Weather
Sunny day with temperatures around 28-30°C. Wind from the north west (3 bft) which means a nice tailwind for good parts of the stage.

Nice and succinct preview, as per usual, Flamin.

After going chalk today I'l go with an overwhelming dog tomorrow. Tejay FTW.

I might actually tune in a bit earlier if, as I expect, the break looks to have a chance.

No idea who is gonna win tomorrow, but i think there will be a big crash and someone has to abandon his podium ambitions. You heard it here first.

I'm gonna figure out who's responsible for the route change
I'm gonna find him
I'm gonna talk with him about my dissatisfaction with his decision

Should be a stage for the sprinters - Big chance I'll be wrong.

It is not for spriters, I was there this year and the last part is hard. Zugarramurdi climb has step sections and a narrow road. Anyway the origimal route was much more interestig,

Valverde and Yates should go for the win, but we will see if they are interesting in the day before the Queen stage

Good day for Contador to try something

If the GC riders weren't so cautious/calculating, then this stage could do a lot of damage IF properly raced......

Breakaway will do :)

Looking at that map I can but agree. (down hill as well) What were they thinking?

it's the same finish as in Pais Vasco 2014, when Tony Martin won the stage. The peloton will be small, and the winner will come from the breakaway anyway. Should be no problem at all

Amazing how they finally designed a proper hilly stage and then completely spoiled it for no apparent reason.

Gogl, Wyss, Smukulis, Stamsnijder, Lagutin, Wallays, Lampaert, Laengen, Conti, Rossetto, Benedetti & Cardis.

That is not a strong break.

Doesn't seem to be necessary today.

But not bad and 12 riders...they have already 10 minutes. Who is going to work? Rosetto would be my favourite, but he is injured.

When I see Smukulis a few days ago I was very surprised with his constitution, he doent look a cyclist, he has big legs and muscles... It is hard to believe for me he can pass well Arritxulegui- Aguiña
