After an exciting E3 Harelbeke, it's time for the 80th edition Gent Wevelgem. Will we see action from the beginning? Will it come down to Kemmelberg? Or will it be a reduced sprint?

Weather forecast:
gw2018-weather4_1_1.png

Partly sunny at first, then perhaps some light rain later. More interesting is the wind though - between 3 and 6 m/s (so not that much) but blowing from the NNE, which means headwind straight after the hill zone (that first stretch). Not good news for escapees after Kemmel if the peloton behind is still big enough to organise itself.

And once again, the so-called "Plugstreets" are featured in the race.

Hans De Clercq: “Last year, the Plugstreets contributed sportively just as we hoped for. After the first climb of the Kemmelberg, the contests did not cease. But above all: never before have we succeeded in bringing the First World War to the fore as strongly as during the contest. Ghent-Wevelgem introduced the ‘in Flanders Fields’ baseline worldwide with real goosebumps moments”.

Since the new route this has been a great race with a unique identity. E3 Harelbeke is also a good race, but it's just a mini Ronde van Vlaanderen.

I agree. I also really like that while the crucial climbs in all other cobbles classics are actually mostly known for being part of the ronde, Gent Wevelgem has it's own mythical cobbled ramp, with the Kemmelberg.

Anyway, hoping for a boring edition since I can't watch

The meme will never die, Gigs. And the law of nature that preceded it won't either.

Am I the only one that thought Bennati had retired years ago already? My last memory of him is when he got second in that one Vuelta stage Juan José Haedo won (where a bunch of riders took the wrong turn lol).

I still remember he was the next big thing in 2007-2008 and then he pretty much vanished again. He's the Cunego of sprinters. Speaking of Cunego, is he still riding?

Cunego is retiring this year after the Italian national's o believe because his team wasn't invited to the giro. Bennati won a stage in 11 and 12 Vuelta and could have won a stage in I believe the 14 tour. He had a vicious attack on a flat stage in the last 2 or so km that wasn't expected and than immediatly had a flat.
I liked him though same with the Prince.

Re: 2018 Gent-Wevelgem, Deinze › Wevelgem (251.1k) - March 2

After the 2015 race, which was one of the most spectacular day's racing I've ever seen, I think I will always have high hopes for this race, although it is unlikely to be too selective this year. Still, I hope the likes of Sagan, GVA and Gilbert will prevent it being decided by the likes of Groenewegen, Viviani and Kristoff.

I'll go with Trentin to get a much deserved win but it's extremely wide open.

I agree. Let's hope for early action like in E3 Harelbeke. Since GW is not as selective as E3, the Steppers need to send a trio up the road instead of a duo.

If it comes down to the final round of Kemmelberg, I think there is a great chance for a bunch sprint of some sort.

Re: 2018 Gent-Wevelgem, Deinze › Wevelgem (251.1k) - March 2

How hard is the climbs and cobbles in this race? If a team or someone would try and make it hard from where the first climbs start on the map and forward that would probably drop the sprinters right?

The problem is that there isn't any Kittels or Cavs in the race.

It's all sprinters who are decent cobbles riders like Groenewegen, Viviani and Démare. It's not a walk in the park to eliminate those guys.
