2018 Giro CQ Game

One week and about half an hour from now, the Giro d'Italia starts in the quiet, typically Italian, town of Jerusalem.

Teams are beginning to be released, adverts are appearing on EuroSport: it must be time to get the game ready.
Discussion in the Vuelta thread last season was in favour of following the UCI in reducing the size of teams, but keeping the budget the same. Who can dethrone Fauniera, last year's winner?

Team of exactly eight riders all of whom must be Giro starters.
Budget Budget will be 3500 points.

Price of riders
CQ score for 12 months to 29th April, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 30th will be considered definitive.
There is a dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game, and a facility for checking the team total, as soon as possible after that download is available, and I shall try to keep that up to date with team changes as best I can.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at Velorooms,
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else, not even price or team name: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care, as do accents or other diacritics) It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams. If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

I have logged my team with Bminchow, the first person to submit a team, and won't change it unless any of them drop out, so there cannot be any accusation of me stealing everyone else's best ideas.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Friday 4th May at 11am in Jerusalem, 10am in Western Europe, 9am in GB/Ireland, and other equivalents wherever you may be.

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2). Note there are no points issued for the young rider category. The winner will be declared as of the CQ points given by 27th May. Subsequent penalties/retroactive disqualifications, should there be any, will not effect the game.

EntriesEntries as of Friday morning, I need to go to work but time for a few last minute entries.

If you have not seen your name 12 hours after submitting it, drop me a reminder. If you are on another forum, by all means plug it there. We had 46 teams last year, let's try to beat it this time around.

Good luck to all.

Thanks to CQ for getting the Monday update online in good time this week: the spreadsheet is ready (two teams still to confirm, I have posted PCS's prediction for now for FdJ and EF), my team is ready to send to the first manager to submit.

A short run-in for this one: I need the teams by Friday morning. I look forward to seeing your teams and discovering where I have gone wrong.

New subscribers here might not be able to PM me: you can PM me at VeloRooms without needing to wait for a minimum number of posts.

Thanks for the game.

The spreadsheet doesn't work or maybe i somehow downloaded it wrong or whatever. Will try to build a team anyway.

Sorry to hear that: has it worked for you in the past? Anyone else having problems (or success) with it? The original, un-uploaded, version worked fine, and I have just done a successful test on it.

I don't think it is usable on-line: you need to download and take it out of Protected mode (I hope this is not insultingly basic to you, I have no idea of your level of computer experience)

Team submitted, without riders I don't like.
I used the first spreadsheet with Pozzato, no problems here after downloading.
Thanks for putting the game together year after year.

Thanks, i'm fine. Nearly done with my team. And my level of computer skills is very low. :D

Just over 24 hours before the race starts and the game closes.

22 teams in so far, with 49 of the 176 riders named, 19 of them as unique picks. There is one rider on a very high proportion of teams, 3 others on more than half the teams, and to be among the most popular 8, a rider would need at least 7 picks thus far.
One team has the most popular team possible within the budget, while another has a popularity ranking just 44% of that. 4 riders costing 800pts or more have been chosen, while 9 men costing fewer than 100 points have been considered worth including.

Don't forget that the race starts, rather inconveniently for those trying to run a game based on it, on a Friday morning. 24 hours to get your teams in.

I sent my team this morning, this will be my first CQ game. I know very little of the CQ ranking, so i don't expect much, but it will be fun :)

Thanks for all the entries: strange shift in popularities over the last 24 hours which I haven't seen any news story to explain. Work and other commitments means I probably won't be able to do much by way of putting up the data until late this evening.

I tend not to be too fussy about late entries, so although I have said 9am, hold on for about 3 hours please, from the timestamp of this post if you want to put up your own team in case others are slightly after that.

After a 3 year break I've tried to submit a team (although the message is in my Outbox rather than sent)?? Hope it makes me watch more of the Giro.

The teams

There are 44 of them, and here they are (in alphabetical order, and price order within each team). The asterisk, as ever, indicates unique picks. A few forgot that team size had changed to 8, some thought it had risen to 12, and some either penalised themselves with a very low spend, or tried to break the bank with a high one, but everyone got in with a legitimate team in the end.

I'm not sure Igor Anton was a good pick being unique. But more reason to cheer for him.
For the first time (as far as I can remember) I didn't pick a sprinter because the good ones are to expensive for the few sprint stages and I rather cheer for a climber like Igor Anton than a sprinter like Guardini or Sbaragli.

Rider Popularity

70 of the 176 (well, 175 now, luckily no-one had chosen Siutsou) riders, have been picked. Chaves is the must-have at an irresistible price, and but he is followed on the popularity table by two of the most expensive picks. At the time I left to work on Thursday, I think Lopez had 11 picks to just 2 for Pinot, but confidence in the Frenchman blossomed on Thursday, and he was on almost every team I opened when I got in.

These selections, remember, are out of 44 teams:

36: CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban
25: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
24: PINOT Thibaut
20: FORMOLO Davide
19: KANGERT Tanel
17: WOODS Michael
15: GUARDINI Andrea
14: VAN POPPEL Danny
9: DENNIS Rohan, O'CONNOR Ben, SBARAGLI Kristian
8: BRAMBILLA Gianluca
7: BENNETT George, CARTHY Hugh, GIBBONS Ryan
6: FERNANDEZ ANDUJAR Ruben, GESINK Robert, YATES Simon
5: BONIFAZIO Niccolo, CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, MEINTJES Louis, PANTANO GOMEZ Jarlinson, VERVAEKE Louis
4: DE MARCHI Alessandro, DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd, HERMANS Ben, MORABITO Steve, REICHENBACH Sébastien
3: ARU Fabio, BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto, BONNET William, CICCONE Giulio, MODOLO Sacha, SEPULVEDA Eduardo
2: ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin, BENNETT Sam, DUPONT Hubert, HAIG Jack, HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis, HIRT Jan, MARECZKO Jakub, PLAZA MOLINA Ruben, TORRES AGUDELO Rodolfo Andres

and those picked just the once are indicated in the previous post.

For a Collective Wisdom team within budget, I can't find a combination better than Ruvu75's selection, so I'll do something different, and in acknowledgement of the big jump from 8th and 9th in popularity, this time. The most popular 8 riders have a total cost of 4158, so the score of that team will be 3500/4158 of their scores (rounded to nearest whole number)

Team popularity rankings

36 points if you have Chaves, 1 point if you have a unique pick. Sometimes there is a high correlation between this and the final results, sometimes there isn't. Some take pride in being high on these tables, others delight in having an idiosyncratic team that will be low.

Expensive picks

It is the biggest buys, and the proportion of the budget entrusted to him/them, that determine the main hopes of any team in these games. Here are the riders selected who cost 700 points or more:

Dumoulin and Pinot: Bicycle Boy

Aru and Lopez: Blues in the Bottle, Search, Shalgo

Pinot
and Lopez: BikeRacer33, Fauniera, GPBlanco, Handbrake, Laarsland, Leadbelly, LightBing, Minessa, Semir S, Squire
and Yates: Los Brolin, Mellow Velo
and S Bennett:Tigerion
on his own: Axl, Comodoro, Del1962, Gotland, Nathanptz, Russell23, SafeBet, Salvarani, The Pirate81, Trudgin

Lopez and Pozzovivo: Googolplex
and Yates: Rote Laterne, Scrool07
on his own: Armchair Cyclist, Caruut, Drebola, Hakkie, Kazistuta, Koronin, Premier Andrew, Ruvu75, Vladimir

Poels with Yates and S Bennett: Yellow Knight
and Yates: Bminchow

While half the teams made room for 2 of these expensive riders, and Yellow Knight even managed to squeeze in 3, three teams invested rather more cautiously: Amis Velo and Carlo Altrensig both have George Bennett as their most expensive riders, and Chiron picked no-one dearer than Mareczko.

Odd that nobody selected Aru without also including Lopez.

Stage 1

Purple points (Because I still refuse to call that colour 'cyclamen')
These are guaranteed points, that you get even if the rider doesn't finish the race. They are stage points for the first 10 finishers, and the daily bonus for the race leader.

Pink Points
This is based on the principle of allocating points as though the race is over. It is pretty meaningless until we get to the first serious climb, and even after that can have some fairly dramatic changes, but it is what the main event is about. Scores can be negative, primarily if a rider drops significantly in GC. It includes the Purple points, but also the GC position points, and points for standings in the points and KoM standings (but no Kom points yet).

Bicycle Boy is the only one to have gone for Dumoulin, and that sort of courage deserves at least an appearance at the top of the table. It might even get a placing that sticks.
