The gaps are not that large, but the positions are being doggedly retained.

But who are the riders who are going to have their breakthrough in the third year?

Year 2, Months 11 and 12

Juan Diego Alba Bolivar had had a couple of uninspiring years as a young rider at Movistar, and was looking to get a kick start at Androni Giocattoli when we were putting our teams together. That was enough hope for @Riverside to grant him a place in his team for this game, and two years on, Alba has just won the Vuelta a Costa Rica for the Ecuadorian lower level Movistar team, gaining 35 points and making himself, and Riverside, the only scorers in the game in this not-entirely-off-season time frame.

Number crunching to follow in the next few days, real life allowing.

8 of these were not in the top 18 for Year 1.

De Lie has 3154 and still has a year to go. Since the game started, only Bernal, Pogacar and Evenepoel had more than that after 3 years. Cavendish, Quintana, Cungo, Sagan and Valverde can be added to that list if we go back to the beginning of CQ points. He needs 956 in 2024 to overtake Pogacar as the best scorer during the game, 1333 to overhaul Sagan for second including the pre-game scorers, and 1449 to be the most dramatically emerging rider (by the definition of this game) since CQ started (essentially, since 2000)

That best possible team to the end of year 2 has a total of 20740, more than 3000 ahead of any other year the game has been going: this seems to be an exceptional cohort. And Ray has 69.3% of that, which has only been bettered once.

Not all scores are high though: there were 3 riders that we saw selected who haven't scored since, and two of the Collective Wisdom team are eligible for the cycle that is about to start.

Top riders on top 5 teams:

Squire13354

Outscoring the collective scores of Sheffield, Waerensjold and Gregoire by 560 might be a big ask of Van Gils, but the riders lower down each team's total might yet have a part to play.

Here is the spreadsheet: let's see how its data change over the remaining year.

Year 3 Month 1 to 4th Feb

This ought to be the year in which our picks, if they are not doing so already, should be establishing the real level at which they can compete. Whether that is the level we hoped it would be in early 2022 is another matter.

However, they have been outscored by (presumably younger) equivalents in the for update for the year. Hopefully that means that they are building their calendars around more auspicious races.

All the riders on Evans' team seem to have been at the same, particularly good, New Year's Eve party.

Standings

January scores are probably not typical, but SafeBet took back 332 points this month, leaving the gap at 228, and suggesting that we still have a race on our hands, despite Ray's stranglehold thus far.

Rather differing permutations of riders in the teams at the top this time around, but a good boost for those that went early on Lenny Martinez.
Evans' was the lowest scoring team last time, the highest this time: youth are fickle.

In December, I wrote
Outscoring the collective scores of Sheffield, Waerensjold and Gregoire by 560 might be a big ask of Van Gils, but the riders lower down each team's total might yet have a part to play.
Well 534 points of the gap between the top two have been wiped out already since then, and Ray and SafeBet now find themselves nearly 700 points clear of the rest

They have 6 riders in common (5 of whom are fairly necessary to be high in the table: De Lie, Ayuso, Zingle, Plapp, Uijtdebroecks, and the sixth of whom, Romo, has been a popular disappointment), so the guys who make a difference are:
Ray10Safebet
SHEFFIELD MagnusVAN GILS Maxim
GREGOIRE RomainPITHIE Laurence
WAERENSKJOLD SørenVERNON Ethan
FERRON ValentinMILAN Jonathan
TURNER BenPICCOLO Andrea
ASKEY LewisTIBERI Antonio
DVERSNES FredrikNYS Thibau
HAGENES Per StrandBARONCINI Filippo
STAUNE-MITTET JohannesLIPOWITZ Florian
HELLEMOSE AsbjørnBRENNER Marco
LÜHRS Luis-JoeOSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro
PIDCOCK JosephUMBA LOPEZ Abner Santiago

Who will be the big 2024 scorers among these to determine the result (or am I underestimating the teams that are behind)?

Rather differing permutations of riders in the teams at the top this time around, but a good boost for those that went early on Lenny Martinez.
Evans' was the lowest scoring team last time, the highest this time: youth are fickle.

Standings
Having appeared almost unassailable for so long, Ray can now no longer even hang on to second as Laarsland leapfrogs both him and Los Brolin. SafeBet meanwhile continues his amazing year 3 pace, and looks well on his way to a two in a row. Pleanty of competition for the places below him though, as shown by the rather volatile placings in the lower top ten.

I'm fairly sure that the Tour has never had less impact on year three in this game. (even including unpicked riders, 9th with 6th on a stage for Derek Gee is about as good as it got)

Standings
Safebet's lead is now over 2000 points, and it is hard to see that being clawed back: it increased further this time, with his 4th place and 200 points more than those closest. Greenedge and Nathanptz were also in the top ten both this time around and in the overall going into it, Greenedge gaining one place.

I fear that the Vuelta will be kinder to the 2022-26 edition than to this one. We'll reconvene here in a few weeks to find out.

Except the two really big hitters Ayuso and De Lie, this must surely be a rather disappointing cycle of the game. Looking at both my own team and Safebet's, there are a lot of picks which never amounted to much.

I see that I have Tiberi for the Vuelta while two of the teams above me do not, so maybe there's an outside chance for me to sneak onto the podium with a good finish.
I put forward Niklas Märkl, Samuel Watson, Marco Frigo, Mattia Petrucci and Lennart Van Eetvelt as candidates for the collective ignorance team.
Was funny reading this from January 2022! LVE would have been a very good pick, and I guess he is indeed on the collective ignorance team. But the others not so much. Watson maybe okay-ish. Good thing I didn't go with Petrucci, who retired one year later.

Who did you consider, but omit, and you were surprised to see that he is not one of the 115 riders that someone else fancied? On those grounds, I will propose Sam Welsford (and perhaps those 4 from the Good in 2021 team) as likely to feature in Collective Ignorance. Who do you think will be there?
Sam Welsford was a good call (just sneaks into the top possible team of 18); Wirtgen, Delettre, Zoccarato or Hocevar (who all scored well in 2021 but within the 200 limit, none of them were selected) not so much: their combined total is less than Welsford's.

Year 3 Month 8 12 Aug to 8 Sept

This group, with a couppe of notable exceptions, had little involvement in the Vuelta compared to what might be expected of Year 3, but they were busy getting plenty of points elsewhere:

This is going to be the edition that breaks all the records: already far past the highest ever total (was 20191), could well be the biggest ever winning margin, likely to be the first repeat win/successful defence, and probably more.

And although not in the spreadsheet yet, the top tens for Brenner and Romo in Giro della Toscana the other day have given @SafeBet the first ever 10000 point season.

Arnaud de Lie has overtaken Pogacar and Bernal to be the highest scoring pick in the game's history, and is within 100 points of overhauling Valverde as the highest first three (main) years of those whose careers took off since CQ has been lodging points.

Juan Ayuso is just 6 points short of overtaking Evenepoel to be 4th in the game era (still behind not only Valverde, but also Sagan, Quintana, Cunego and Cavendish had the game started when CQ did)

Every team that has been successful has had some riders who never hit the heights expected of them, but I don't think the numbers bear out your assertion.

Prior to this year, the highest winning score (as mentioned above) was 20191: SafeBet again, in the edition that finished last year (it was also the year with the highest Best Possible Score). De Lie and Ayuso, even as riders that could have been picked a year earlier, were top and 4th in the scoring ranks, so if we leave them out, the top remaining 16 (ie, the rest of the best possible selection) were
SKJELMOSE JENSEN Mattias
3011
KOOIJ Olav
2629
RODRIGUEZ CANO Carlos
2204
ZINGLE Axel
1745
JORGENSON Matteo

HEALY Ben
1288
GALL Felix
1245
SHEFFIELD Magnus
1213
VINE Jay
1192
RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto
1191
Zingle, Zana, Schmidt, Johannessen, Healy, Gall and Vine all having been unselected. 25726 for the 16 of them.

In the cycle coming towards its end, the top sixteen without those two is:
ZINGLE Axel
2452
VAN GILS Maxim
2004
MILAN Jonathan
1879
VAUQUELIN Kévin
1829
SHEFFIELD Magnus
1746
HEALY Ben
1740
GALL Felix
1664
WAERENSKJOLD Søren
1625
STRONG Corbin
1583
GREGOIRE Romain

1266
VAN EETVELT Lennert
1255
PLAPP Lucas
1205
WELSFORD Sam
1138
TIBERI Antonio
1119
Vauquelin, Van Eetvelt and Welsford serving as those to embarrass us all. Total 25479, almost exactly the same with the tail end of the season still to play out. Median here about 140 higher, although slightly less top end.

SafeBet is at 71.5% of the maximum possible, well ahead of any previous winner, and last years 64.8% would have a score that Ray beats and Laarsland is very close to.
