2022-2024 Emerging Riders CQ Game

Page 6 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Arnaud de Lie has overtaken Pogacar and Bernal to be the highest scoring pick in the game's history, and is within 100 points of overhauling Valverde as the highest first three (main) years of those whose careers took off since CQ has been lodging points.

Juan Ayuso is just 6 points short of overtaking Evenepoel to be 4th in the game era (still behind not only Valverde, but also Sagan, Quintana, Cunego and Cavendish had the game started when CQ did)
And still, the 2024 of Arnaud has been kinda disappointing considering his results of last year and this year performances (showing a big problem for the future: that he's super strong but he may have the worst brain in pro cycling, regarding saving energy, knowing your own limits, playing team tactics... A weakness that is going to be a huge mountain to climb in order to become a succesful classic rider in the highest scenarios).

Standings
Ray's 2nd place coming under real pressure now, but SafeBet quietly extends that lead by another 200 points or so. No coronation yet, but that's just because I'm fussy about not jumping the gun.

Year 3 Month 10
The update only covers 7 to 20 October: I'm confident that there are no relevant races after that, but there probably will be minor adjustments and corrections that are not in the CQ download. I'll take the risk of assuming that they will be of negligible effect, and treat this as the end of year.

The top three have occupied the podium places since (I believe) the end of Year 1, except for a couple of brief displacements of Laarsland by Los Brolin. Ray had been top for nearly two years, but SafeBet has had an extraordinary final year to seal a follow-up victory after a dominant win in the previous cycle, ending up with the highest game total, the largest winning margin, greatest percentage of optimal score, and the biggest year 3 score (all by considerable increments over the previous).

More details to follow.

That is a total of 35055: the highest previous figure was 31142, and, even leaving aside Covid affected years, it has been as low as 24677 (2015-17), so this is a seriously high scoring edition, mainly because of the presence of De Lie (the highest scoring rider by this metric in the time that CQ has been running (since 1999), Ayuso (8th) and Zingle (17th).
That is not to detract from the achievement in SafeBet's score as the highest ever: he has 71% of the maximum possible, beating the previous highest of 69.5% (Madrazo, 2015-17), and has the biggest winning margin (2159, previously 1430, also SafeBet, last year)

Perhaps more related to the presence of a number of high scorers this year is the very high year 3 scores:

Kevin Vauquelin leads the Collective Ignorance team, and beats Vlasov to become the best scoring unselected player in the 9 completed editions, and is one of three such in the best possible team. The Collective Ignorance team got its second highest score ever, but it's worst position.

It should be noted that the best possible team has four riders that continue into the next cycle of the game: Gregoire, Van Eetvelt, Martinez and Onley lead the scoring in the 2023-25 Collective Wisdom team. This time around, Collective Wisdom has 6 of the best possible team, but also some non performers such as Umba and Vandenabeele: it also combines its best ever score with its worst ever placing. That means I probably ought to do a percentage of best possible rather than a straight total of points when I recalculate the performance of players across several years.

Evans is the Best, in 17th, is the highest placed manager without De Lie. Not picking the highest scorer ever is not the only mistake made though: between us, we picked 28 riders who remain eligible for the game in its 2025-27 edition (for which you should by now be at least thinking about making a shortlist), and two who scored not a single point in the three years.

There are 2 more teams who had been ever present, and one that did 8, that didn't make the top ten. Ludwigzgz falls from 2nd having not entered this edition, but has returned since.

Average scores are very much affected by what years someone has entered: some have had one good cycle then abandoned us, and those for whom this particularly high scoring edition has been their first go are clumped at the top.
So these are average scores for those who have been in at least half of the completed versions (ie, at least 5 out of 9). That means that SafeBet isn't winning on this metric (yet, but come back in a year...)

The problem of some cohorts of riders being much higher scoring than others is negated if we give each team a score which is their percentage of the best possible score. If we take the average, teams with few participations dominate, but those who are proving to be consistent show themselves .

Collective Wisdom comes in at 57.8, the Ignorance collective at 61.7

Or we could take the total of the best three of these percentage scores for each participant, and add them, thus allowing those who have been loyal for longest to omit their poorer performances, and excludes those who haven't played enough to show consistency.

I'll see if I can come up with some rider comparisons across the years tomorrow.

popularity is n/a for the years before the game started.

However, those are not actually the highest 20 scores: sometimes a rider can get a very high score while not yet at their game peak (ie, when they pass the 200 point threshhold during year 2).

So the best scores that have been achieved, while still available (or theoretically available, as some of these are before I started the game) for another year after it finished, are:

Which actually shows that I was in error when I declared Vauquelin as the highest scoring unselected rider: that is only true of those who reached the end of eligibility without being picked. Pogacar and Evenepoel have higher scores.

You will also notice that Gregoire and Van Eetvelt are going into the next round of the game: remove 108 from Gregoire's score, and 139 from Ven Eetvelt's, and their 2025 scores will be added to that (so LVE only needs 394 next year to overhaul Vauquelin as highest scoring never picked rider, or 580 to beat Pogacar's unpicked score)

We can take it further, and look at the best score when a rider is still in the first year of a cycle (not necessarily a one year score, but one in which years 1 and 2 combined had no more than 199 points) These were, therefore, points taken almost exclusively in the first year in which the rider made himself noteworthy.

Note the remarkable fast-fading firework of a career of Moreno Moser featuring there. Any of these would have been a great pick eventually, albeit one that required foresight, courage, and patience, and maybe a bit of distrust in those you had otherwise considered. Only one of them was actually picked at that stage though: ValvPiti picked Sergio Higuita in 2017, and promptly said

I think picking Reyes and especially Higuita will prove to be a mistake, despite their talents, due to how the CQ rankings work. But its more fun to pick with your heart than your brain, especially in a 3 year long game.

Jeanniere and Del Toro are the newest appearing in that list: Del Toro was unpicked again for the 2023-25 edition, in which Jeanniere is a unique pick for Leadbelly. But in the 2024-26 version, the last for which they are eligible, Del Toro is near ubiquitous (40/42), while Jeanniere was not selected at all.

One more long-term rider stat that might be noted is the persistence with which hope was placed in some riders were selected.
Soren Waerenskjold was picked for 2019-2021, again in 2020-22, 2021-23 before finally putting himself out of availability while part of the just finished 2022-24 edition.
Aurelian Paret Peintre also was picked for 4 different cycles before he finally became, by the definition of the game, emerged, but managed to do so non-consecutively: 2015-17, 2016-18, then was overlooked in 2017-19 before another too-early-to-be-fruitful pick in 2018-21, and finally proved worthy of selection ( and went on to get a respectable 1106) in the 2019-21 game.

So your challenge for 2025-27 will be to avoid the premature Aurelien, while not missing out on the there-won't-be-a-second-chance Emilien.
