Neither Hindley nor Almeida are dark horses ...They are contenders based on previous results

A dark horse is a complete outsider like Lopez that non one considered

Please see definition of a dark horse for correct use

  1. a candidate or competitor about whom little is known but who unexpectedly wins or succeeds.
Carapaz only has a few serious rivals now. Big opportunities for Hindley and Almeida if they can stay consistent in the mountains but Carapaz tends to get better as the race progresses. Not sure he has the same form as his previous Giro win though. Dumouilin, Yates and Bardet's troubles have taken a lot of interest out of the race. Dumoulin's days as a GC rider might be done. You never know what Landa will do but he will probably never get a better opportunity for another podium. He often seems to find trouble though. Ironically his best GC form was often when riding for Froome and Aru. ........

Carapaz can stay very consistent for 3 weeks but he doesn't have some clear 3rd week spike lol.

Not many do. Rog;lic usually tapers off in the third week as did Froome quite often until he stopped attacking so much in the mountains. Quintana at his best had good third weeks and Pogacar just stays good throughout but in the last Tour he did look tired in the last few days but still good enough to withstand attacks. This race is looking more like the 2020 version . I expect the overall to be close unless something decisive happens in the TT but even then the gaps probably won't be too big.

"usually" meaning got sick once and was once running on fumes in November after being in red hot form from June?

2018 Tour - climbing his best in the 3rd week, but suffered in the ITT from a rock in his elbow
2019 Giro - got sick, which is well known, was already suffering as early as stage 4 and then equally bad in week 2 and 3
2019 Vuelta - No problems uphill in week 3
2020 Tour - best climber in the Alps, got widely flamed for not burying Pogacar there
2020 Vuelta - Was in red hot form since June, still beat mythical 3rd week Carapaz in the third week
2021 Vuelta - Did you see the Covadonga stage?

What really happens is you see something happen once or twice, then it becomes this self perpetuating myth about a rider and it never really gets questioned.

This is what "usually" happens with opinions. People see things differently which is okay for some..............if he peaks earlier in the year that matters little, you can't use that as an excuse for later performances, they know their schedules before the season starts and hitting form at the right time is never straightforward. Have to admit that Roglic has improved at balancing his performances over three weeks but if he wins a Giro or Tour I will be more impressed.
