2023-25 Emerging Riders CQ game

Page 3 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Doesn't get much more boring than my team - I have a grand total of one rider (Baudin) picked less than 13 times, and of the 3 Collective Wisdom riders I'm missing (Brenner, Morgado, Syritsa), the former two are among the seven riders I was closest to picking. Kind of makes me regret not going for Gautherat, who was also on that list and would have been a unique pick.

In hindsight, probably should have gone with a different strategy.

I just selected my team pretty fast, because a lot of riders were also picked for the main game that made sense to pick here as well, and submitted it before the New Year.

I have my first rider in action today at the Vuelta al Tachira. < Jesus Goyo (2004) Venezuelan junior TT champion and winner of the queen stage up to La Grita in Vueta Juventud Venezuela.

Goyo should already lead his team GC ambitions this year along with another talent, David Mendoza, who had really poor 2022.

Also worth following Angelvis Arroyo from that team. Junior road-race champion in 2022 where he also won Clasico Ciudad de Valencia and Circuito Andino. Angelvis can handle the medium mountains and is lightning fast in a sprint - a very good talent, almost unbeatable sprinting-wise after a hard race. Only Arlex Mendez jr (HUGE talent) could go up against him last year, but Arlex is from 2005 and still a junior in 2023.

Favorite to take the title in Tachira gotta be Colombian Marco Tulio Suesca in my opinion - he is in crazy form, just won Vuelta a Costa Rica, and the other day he won Circuito Jenesano finish on the steep steep wall up to Alto de Rodríguez. He beat several ex-pros and with Superman Lopez finishing 4th.

Team similarity
The highest amount of overlap between 2 teams is 14, which happens between 13 pairs of teams.
The weird thing is that 8 of these 13 pairs include Skidmark: with Armchair Cyclist, Devil's Elbow, Fivezzz, Joelsim, Madrazo, Otoxiep87, SafeBet and Zipi Zapismo.
I am glad to learn that my team selection remains extremely on-brand, with first in the main game, 2nd in the Women's game, and first in this game for popularity.

It's so interesting - that has just always been how it is for my teams. But like, those three teams were created extremely differently. In the main game, I'm extremely rigorous - I make a long list of like 130 riders, I slowly go through various rounds of poking and prodding them from different angles (what's their team makeup and role? What kind of races are they riding? What are they/their coaches etc saying in interviews?), and revisit it multiple times until I can whittle it down to 33 eventually. But there's no real mystery or boutique quality to it - I don't ever think that I need a classics guy for balance or that I have too many riders of one nation or anything like that - I just want to pick the collection of individual riders I'm most confident about their probability of being a good pick for the game. And they end up being popular. Does that mean I have my finger on the pulse? That I'm boring? A little of both? :D

Then for this game, I'm usually squeezed for time with processing the main game so I usually start with the riders on my longlist that I selected for the main game, with the thinking that of course if I was confident in them this year I should also be for the 3-year. Then i fill with a hodgepodge of other riders I had my eyes on and marked as having less than 200 career points. And then for the women's game, I was like 'huh I dunno much about this' and threw together a team in an hour. But it all flows back to the same place in terms of popularity of riders on my teams. Does this mean I should skip the months-long process in the main game and just go with my gut? I bet 30 of my 33 riders would be the same if I did, or something along those lines. But I like the process I guess is really it. Helps me get hyped for the season and learn more about riders.

Anyway, some rambling musing - hope this year (and the next two) is fun for everyone, good luck!

I had to admit Van Eetvelt wasn't at all fixed in my team.

In fact, he was initially one of my last discards, but I ended making room for him & Steinhauser insead of Ryan & Penhoet. Let's see how it pays, cause it was really a tough call, the other hard discard being Thompson (who was also one of the last cuts last year).

In the case of Van Eetvelt, a factor to make room for him in the last week was that I read in twitter about the Lotto's tests in Mallorca and he was supposedly the best man in the uphill efforts.

And here we go

Year 1, month 1 to Feb 5th

Of those we picked, those who have made the best start to the season are:

The top 6 picked up their points on 5 different continents.

At this stage, the monthly scores and the overall are obviously the same. I'd be happy enough if the final order was the same as well...

The top seven, at least, all have the Van Eetvelt/Gloag/Penhoet/Martinez combination apart from Nyssinator, who omitted Penhoet but picked Riccitello. Squire additionally has Salby, but fewer points, so far, from his other team members.

The Collective Ignorance team always makes a good start: by definition, it cannot have any riders still waiting to get going. But a WorldTour win while still eligible for Year 1 in the game is pretty rare, and Mayrhofer has shamed us all by collecting that, but no votes of confidence from us. He heads up that team, but in three years time, it could include kids who most of us have still never heard of.

Velorooms has the first lead in the interforum challenge: 204, to 202 for Parliamento Ciclismo and 192 for Cycling News.
