2025 Tour de France CQ Manager game

Here we go again.

If you have played before, then the reminders you will need are 8 riders, 4000 CQ point budget, team selection spreadsheet here, prices fixed as of Monday 30 June, PM to me by the start of stage 1 at 13:40 (I believe, French time) on Saturday 5th July.

If that means nothing to you, then let me explain further:

Your goal is to get as many points as you can (according to the system at CQranking.com : points available for all finishers according to their GC position, top 10 in each stage and on points and mountains classifications, and for the overnight leader: column G1 in the first two tables here) during the Tour. But you must choose 8 men who are taking part in the Tour, and each rider has a price which is their CQ score for the 12 months to 29th June (a download from CQ will confirm and lock in those prices on the 30th). That means that while you can of course think about your selection before that date, you shouldn't be sure that you can send it until then. You have a budget of 4000 of such points.

During the race, I will post daily updates of scores at that point, as though that were the final result of the race, and in a minor classification, which tracks only stage points.

When it is time to submit, please use PM on this site to me There is no need to include teams or prices: they simply need to be deleted before I can enter them into the spreadsheet. And you make life much easier if you can use the same version of names as used on the CQ site (Danish, Eritrean, Portuguese and Spanish language names might require particular attention). Your team should be sent in before stage 1 starts on Saturday 5th July at 13:40 local (French) time. If you send your team in in good time, then I can check it and let you know if there is a problem: I do have a rather convoluted way of replacing ineligible picks: I'll post it if necessary.

Riders who are due to compete, their CQ names, and their prices, as well as the scale of points available to be won, are on a Dropbox spreadsheet here

Good luck to all.

I should have clarified/reminded: best not to try to enter before late on Sunday (or better still after the spreadsheet is out on Monday, so that the prices are confident. Any calculations you make before then will have to incorporate any national championship points as last year. Besides, most teams' line-ups are unlikely to be confirmed before Tuesday or Wednesday.
Edit: That's no longer applicable, any time from now would be an excellent time to get the selections to me.

Just to be 100% sure, the price of each rider is based on the "Current CQ-value" in the top-right corner of the rider's profile? (Under the thing that looks sort of like a speedometer.)
It is, and what is there at the moment is unlikely to change before Saturday (CQ remove old results after the equivalent race in the current year, and I doubt anyone in the Tour this year raced between the national championships and the Tour last year)

But the definitive prices, lest there be a conflict, are those in the download that will be on the download from CQ that will (I hope) be made available later today, and will be in the spreadsheet and on this thread in a table that either @search or I will get around to in the next 24 hours or so.

And I always think of that as more like a fuel gauge...

I have prepared it and can post once the CQ update is online (hopefully later today).

I'm off to Sibiu tomorrow, though, so likely won't be able to keep it updated.

Mod tools will allow me to edit it and make any changes after you do the initial bit: many thanks.

I have populated the selection spreadsheet with the prices per the team listing pages at CQ, which certainly should be the same as will appear on the download. So what is in the spreadsheet now (like the numbers by the petrol gauge on each rider's page today) have a very high degree of confidence.

yeah, current rankings should normally be correct. So here's the table, using those values as well

The spreadsheet awaits your teams.

The download eventually appeared: a small number of national championships had not been updated when I lifted data from the site directly (which I guess is why the download hadn't been made available at that point), but now the prices in the spreadsheet are definitive. The only rider selected thus far to be changed is Michael Woods (he was listed at 502, cost now 442).

17 teams have now announced their team, hopefully the remaining 6 will do so today. (update: 22 teams now confirmed, Ineos dragging their heels)
Now its up to you lot to name yours.

41 teams in the end: only one over budget, but they were able to adjust rather than use my default.

The leader of the Four Seasons challenge after 2 events (@abbulf) hasn't entered, so that is very much in play (28 teams still involved there)

Rider popularity

Of the first 12 teams submitted, 11 had Vingegaard. for a long time he was clearly the most popular pick ahead of Thomas, but the nearer we got to the start, the fewer teams wanted to commit that much to one rider. Thomas eventually caught up with the second last submitted. Gall was about equally with Rodriguez and Buchmann, last night, but this morning's flurry of teams were not so keen on the latter two.

and if you add in the 34 riders asterisked in the previous list as unique picks, that should be 82 of the 184 riders selected.

To make a Collective Wisdom team fit the budget, I couldn't include Lipowitz or Buitrago , and Lutsenko had the price to best fill the remaining cost allowance, so those in bold make up that team.

Team popularity
The very last team submitted, while the riders were in the neutralised zone, blew this category away.

The two other teams you see at the bottom of that table are

Default team: the logical consequence of the principles I would have had to use if there had been any uncorrected invalid teams entered. It is essentially the 8 guys who are closest in price with a maximum cost as close to, without exceeding, 4000 pts in total:
ARENSMAN Thymen
BITTNER Pavel
BAUDIN Alex
WRIGHT Fred
SOLER Marc
SIMMONS Quinn
JEGAT Jordan
COQUARD Bryan

Team Pog: Pogacar was way over budget (the budget for the game has remained the same since in started), but just for the sake of interest I have matched him with the 7 cheapest riders to see what might have happened if the budget were 5279 points. That would mean that everyone would have had an extra 1279 points, enough to add at least Oscar Onley to their team (not that that is necessarily the choice that everyone would have made), so the Pogacar team will have Onley's points deducted to act as a point of comparison.

At least none of us had picked Ganna or Bissegger

Green points

A dominant sprinter can often score as high as those in about 4th on GC in these games. That wasn't enough to entice any of us to spend large on Philipsen

but do not celebrate or despair too early: these scores are predicated on a situation in which Philipsen stays in yellow all te way to Paris.

Reactions: Blues in the bottle
The fifth-most popular rider being on less than a quarter of the teams is wild. Pretty surprised at how divergent the teams are in general, although perhaps my surprise goes without saying given the popularity rankings...

5th most popular is on 18/41: 6th is on less than a quarter (you may have missed Thomas and Vingegaard sharing the top line)

I guess that, for pretty much every manager,
"To Vingegaard or not to Vingegaard, that was the question.
Whether 'twas nobler in the budget to suffer
43% on one rider's outrageous fortune,
Or to take refuge in a bunch of lower top ten hopefuls
And by not opposing Pogacar, hold them."
