OK: looks like TNT are going to put so many ad breaks in that I'll be able to do the game admin without missing anything.

Those numbers for number of picks is not accurate for everyone: one of the teams that was subject to enforced changes contacted me virtually as I was about to hit send, so I gave him a bit of time to make his adjustments. But I only edited his team, not the whole table. But you'll see the accurate rider pick stats in my next post.

I had four different teams to choose from in the end and two of them included Magnier. Due to his high price I understand why people were reluctant to pick him, but I am still suprised no one actually did. That goes for Lund as well.

One of my teams was based on the fact that there are four pairs of riders born on the exact same day: Magnier/Kulset, Turner/Mifsud, Kuss/Schultz and Barguil/Campenaerts.

The most popular 7, plus Bouwman in joint 8th, make up a Collective Wisdom team with a very reasonable spend level of 3460. Arensman is as popular, but cut from the CW team on basis of cost.

That last name is perhaps the most interesting: 2 teams went for Vingegaard and then had an average spend of about 32 points for the remaining 7. Saved me making up a below the line team based on him...

In addition to the riders named above, there should be 28 marked as unique in the team lists (I might need to check some of those after the late alteration), which means there are 115 guys riding around Italy and Bulgaria with the specific goal of denying us points.

Popularity Ranking
For the benefit of our new players (BsAsCycling, Nightowl, Il Maestro: you are very welcome, and should know that the Vuelta game last year was won by a first (and apparently last) time player), this is on the basis of 21 points for Mas, 20 for Pellizari... down to one for a unique pick) It is by no means a reliable predictor of success.

I am surprised that I am so far down the popularity ranking. In contrast to my overall 2026 team, for this game I went for a much more generic, less unique team. There being so few riders to choose from probably changes things though

Not having any of the three most picked riders will inevitably leave you a long way down.

I feel like I should be allowed an asterisked Bouwman as the 9th rider, which I included in my team.

Well part of my statergy was Milan having the leaders jersey after stage 1, so much for that, also Groves crashing not good

Purplish points

This is the minor classification, based on stage finishes only. Unlike the entirely unrelated maglia ciclamina, the points available are the same in all stages.

When the predicted team for EF appeared on PCS, I had Walsheid instead of Mihkels. I would have been in an even lonelier place on the table.

Pink points

This is the main competition: with GC standings, KoM and Sprint competitions and points for having the right to wear pink in the next stage added to the stage points.

That default team is the extension of the principle I use to replace riders when necessary: the cheapest rider is the most expensive that will allow the other vacancies to be filled within budget. So essentially a random bunch from around the average allowable spend. If you are beaten by them, you may as well have drawn names from a hat.

I thought more than two people would go with the Jonas and a grab bag of random low scorers route which I was strongly tempted by but didn’t as would have less riders to cheer for in a realistic way.

Chose not to double up on my year long game picks with Gee-West and Mas so went elsewhere for GC.

All the good sprinters seemed a bit too expensive for me.

With such a great start I expect the rest of the game to be painful, similar to watching Felix Gall descent.

But you're expecting your descent to be quicker than what his usually are?

It very well could be, but if I end up dead last, I will try to convinve AC to put me back in first place by quoting the Bible.

Still not understanding how the default team is set up

Mathijs Paasschens vs. Manuele Tarozzi is the battle that promises to light up Bulgaria and Italy I suppose.

The smallest possible range from most to least expensive, while still getting as close as possible to, but not over, 3500. So Penhoet (411) is the cheapest and Mozzato (465) the dearest.

I'd like to do a bit of tidying up on the spreadsheet: I'll share it tomorrow and all will be clear.

Do we have any states from the latest GT games on how sprinters fair against GC riders for overall points?

The last 3 years worth:
Giro '23: Milan was 6th highest scorer, in the Best Poss team, Milan and Groves both picked by winner (Peixotini)
Tour '23: Philipsen 4th, Pedersen 10th; Cavendish picked by winner (Postmanhat)
Vuelta '23: Groves 5th, in Best Poss team, in winner's team (Queen Stagiaire)
Giro '24: Milan 3rd, Merlier 8th; Milan in Best poss team; Milan impeccable
Tour '24: Girmay 4th, Philipsen 5th; Girmay and Cavendish in Best Poss; Girmay, Ackermann and Cavendish were impeccable picks; Bennett and Cavendish on winning team (Hfgon)
Vuelta '24: Van Aert 4th, Groves 5th; Groves was an impeccable
Giro '25: Pedersen 3rd, Kooij 7th; winner (Abbulf) had Bennett
Tour'25: Milan 8th; Penhoet and Consonni in winning team (DJW)
Vuelta '25: Philipsen 5th, Pedersen 10th

So in short, the right sprinter at the right price is very worthwhile.

There will also have been crucial small point contributions from cheap sprinters to get the margins between teams: I won the 2017 Tour game having been 2nd before the Champs Elysees by virtue of Cimolai coming 7th.

(The things one can get done with a stage having a soft breakaway)

My team completely decimated from day 2 with Yates crashing...

That‘s Soler out, but at least my GC riders are still in the race.
