I thought she raced smart, got some time, and had a reasonable chance for a win. She doesn't win a lot of races because she's not fast.

I feel like a lot of folks jump to criticizing riders for collaboration. It's really not easy to not work in a break like that, and I don't know what else she'd have done. She sits on and they stop working. She also causes a problem between her and those two which has consequences in other situations, for zero gain. Makes little sense to me.

It's easy to sit on the sidelines and yell at riders not to work. Very different dynamic riding in a group.
This. Once she crests the climb together with the other two and survives the descent it becomes a day to put away knives, drop the hammer together, and kill the rest of the field. If she pulls she maximizes the gain from the work she did in a number of ways, if she plays around there’s a big probability it all goes south for her. I think her ride was pretty unassailable today imho.

That was a great move there at the end, almost pulled it off.

Completely different beast on Friday, and unless my memory is foggy I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this good. After a great (for her admittedly) TT, then riding with the best today, I really believe she’s ready for a very big day on Ventoux. I am hoping for it!

Nice to be in a position where I’d be equally happy with any of these three winning, kind of fun actually. Going to be a big fight I think, I am not convinced (yet) that Demi is just going to grind them up, Reusser is not going away without a big fight either.

This last couple of generations of TT helmets (since the POC buck-toothed blobfish one) have really been worse than doping in respect of attracting people to the sport. Why would any young person with a shred of self-respect want to do something where you have to be seen in public wearing those abominations?
Could not have said it better.

Maybe their self-respect is strong enough to not let it be affected by a silly hat

She is done IMHO. She should be showing better performance by this time already.
Agree. She looks like someone who simply doesn’t have it, certainly not someone whose dynamo is revving up for a giant watt bomb on Friday. I fear she is going to have a rough ride up that thing; I predict a big loss, a lot more than just a couple of minutes.

Going to still be quite hot that day as well in the lead in roads to the climb. Could she be having more problems with the heat than the others?

That’s certainly not out of the question but that said she just hasn’t been in this at all, so who knows. Even if the heat bugging her she just plain looks out of form.

Friday going in will be the great unknown ... it makes for great anticipation. Demi has been fantastic but not dominant. She tried but could not drop Kasia and Marlen today on stage 5. I don't think she has been affected by crashes (last year was worse for her in that respect, I think). I didn't see any abrasions after today's mini-fall. She had almost come to a stop when she toppled over. So I don't think that is a factor at all. Her history suggests that she may prevail on Ventoux. But Reusser and Kasia both look stronger than I had expected. I wouldn't bet against any of those 3. It could be close, which would make Sunday's finale a firecracker.

PFP saying she doesn't feel bad so it must be the others who are better than ever ! Strange and not very credible.
Do you have a link? I saw her say the others were simply stronger than her, not stronger than last year. Everyone feels good until they get dropped.

the racing is good. I'm wondering why only 9 days ? Why can't we give the femmes at least 2 weeks ? Is there that lack of money ? lack of investment ? lack of fans ?

mixture of everything, the womens pro side of the sport is still growing, and getting used to increased budgets, actually paying riders decent wages, well some of them anyway, I think it was Mahé again this race who highlighted she gets just around the national minimum wage for her efforts, like she could work in a coffee shop and probably earn more.

races are building an audience and interest in them and getting better organisation helps, and hopefully investment and more coverage comes over time, but its always baby steps.

you expand a calendar or a race too quickly you can risk it all imploding horribly

take the British racing scene as case example, the womens side especially in the lead up to 2012, hit a peak, lots of races and sponsors and coverage till about 2016/18ish, everything seemed fine and then it all fell apart very quickly

races started losing money, costs rose alot, organisers started losing money too even as they tried to expand races, audience figures dropped, coverage became too costly to fund, without the sponsors who all suddenly decided to do something else with their money.

then you enter a death spiral thats hard to course correct. There are barely any UK womens road races in the calendar anymore, and we have the Tour of Britain Women only starting 2 weeks from now, no-ones talking about it are they ? which riders might be present ? or what coverage its likely to get? its a WWT event too. so some live coverage is part of the deal.

but it will lose money, though they report it generates a surplus somehow, guess its just fortunate perhaps its being run by an org that can absorb such approaches to accounting, as if it returned to a private company organiser they would go out of business very rapidly I suspect.

even the ASO struggled with the Tour de Yorkshire.

so baby steps, its great people are getting more and more interested in TdFFAZ. but you build it slowly you enable the sport to grow, not expand like a balloon with the inevitable bust that follows.

Gutted for PFP. Hoping for a resurrection on Mont Ventoux. Regardless, a bunch of intrigues, Demi in in a great spot: can she close the deal? I think so.

Wow, it's over for Ferrand-Prevot, it's not just about the TT but about form. Rousser strong and Vollering still the favourite. Kasia still in the game!

You are right, but the fact is she prefers to say the others are stronger rather than I am weaker than last year, that's understable. And in previous itw just before TT stage, she said the level of her contenders was very high this year, clearly implying more than last year.

True. But on the other hand if they do swimming, for example, they have to wear speedos

Demi has lost some of her kick but no one is beating her in the high mountain in the form that she is on, its like you don't watch the race, its over they can pack up and go home if she doesnt crash.

I believe you are a little too quick to diminish Kasia’s chances on Ventoux. We shall see. I think it’s going to be really hard for Kasia to make up what she lost in the TT but I won’t be the slightest bit surprised to see her at least win the stage tomorrow.

You cant compare yesterday with Mount Ventoux , its a whole different affair to hang on to Demi for 50 minutes in a sustained high tempo. Im fairly certain Kasia will loose at least a minute tomorrow, probably more.

Stage 6: Montbrison - Tournon-sur-Rhône, 153.4 km

Yesterday showed us who the three strongest riders in the race (currently) are, and big gaps have opened up behind them, which could make it more likely that a breakaway will succeed on today's stage.

But despite it finishing fairly close to sea level, it's still not the easiest stage in the world. The first 85 km include two long very irregular climbing sections, during which four 4th category QOMs as well as the day's intermediate sprint have been positioned. The average gradients won't cause issues for the best riders, but the accumulated climbing is bound to hurt some riders, and the 10 km, -4.5% descent towards the bottom of the Col de Lalouvesc will probably be a welcomed change of pace for them when they get there.

The first 5 km of Lalouvesv average around 65 before it eases off tow ards the top. The descent, which will lead the riders past the top of the Col du Robert Marchand, renamed in honour of the legendary centenarian hobby cyclist, who himself climbed it when he turned 103. Marchand passed away in 2021, aged 109. Here he is shown setting his last age group hour record at 105 back in 2017:

The Côte de Boucieu-le-Roi (3.8 km, 5.7%) starts with 20 km left. The next 6 km are gently downhill before a short uphill rise (approx. 700m at 4-5%) to the bonus sprint in Saint-Barthélemy-le-Plain. The main part of the subsequent descent to Tournon-sur-Rhône is 3 km at -7% before it flattens out towards the line.

With Ventoux coming tomorrow, I don't expect much GC action today, but attacks on Lalouvesc can not be completely dismissed either, since the parcours afterwards isn't the worst to be riding alone or in a small group on.

Sad to see that VdB can't produce the level she did at the Giro and Vuelta. We might see a DNF today or in the next stages.

There is always a chance that riding three GT's for GC could bring about a bad performance.
Makes me wonder if GT is a fair label for what the women are offered. It’s a nicely run stage race, but it’s not even 2 weeks.
