I felt this race deserved its own thread, considering it is the only race (that I know of) in Africa that is rated at least .1 by the UCI scale.

It can also open discussion on why the UCI does not attempt to become "truly international" and promote races like this that have shown a stable track record. I would love to see races like this and the Tour du Faso garner more international attention.

If Voeckler and Europcar are motivated, then he should win comfortably. A class apart in this field. But I'll be cheering for Berhane :D

Shame it was moved from January, the other French teams used to ride too and it added some competition. Now they've moved it to a pretty congested part of the calendar...

French conti teams don't have a whole lot going on now either (besides the Tour of Bretagne if you even want to count that and Tour du Normandie). So it would have been nice to see Saur, FDJ, Bretagne-Schuller, etc. lineup.

Also wish GreenEDGE was going to support Teklehaimanot, who only has like 5 racing days this year.

a few notables: (List more if you have them)

Yves Ngue Ngock of Cameroun won the Tour of Cameroun this year, and could be a name to watch, only 22 years of age too.

Tsagbu Grmay of Ethiopia was 19th in the 2011 Tour d'Avenir, only 20 years old!

Bangba Hamidou Zidewemba of Burkina Faso won the Tour du Faso last year.

I am excited and curious to see how the African national teams handle the likes of Europcar. Especially the young kids who aren't used to 6 days of straight racing

It's almost a pity Europcar is there, as they will probably dominate the race. I rate Adil Jelloul as the strongest rider on another team.

yes, such a race needs to move back to the "off season" to have any chance of getting a good field. Now this is mostly about developing cycling locally, which is fine, but perhaps not quite what sponsors and global fans are looking for at this time.

When the race was in January, they often had 10 or 15 non-african teams applying. But the organizers wanted to have no more than 5 non-african teams in the race to make sure there would be many African riders. They probably had many applications again this year, but decided to keep the teams selection as it is. Which makes sense.

For the same reason, Tour de San Luis, or Tour de Langkawi are probably wondering if it would really be a good idea to become a WorldTour event, because it would prevent them from having many local riders.

It was moved to April for this year only, because of the Cup of African Nations (football) taking place in Gabon this January. Should be back to January for 2013.

Looking at the startlist, Eritrea starts not only without Teklehaimanot (that makes sense, with him being in Europe), but also without Berhane.
Then indeed Jelloul is the strongest African.

Should also mention
18 JELLOUL ADIL MAROC from Marocco who finished same time as leaders, but got 7 bonus seconds (for intermediate sprints would be my guess), so sits seconds overall now

I find it rather pathetic that Europcar comes with such a strong team to such a small race.

I'll laugh so hard if they get beaten by Conti-Astana in the end

thats how the stage unfolded via google translate:

"Morning drive is not allowed to start under the scorching sun. The first third of the race was full of attacks, but failed, only a 45 kilometer solo voyage was released in a fugitive, he was able to hold out for a leader of about 40 kilometers. And then came an advance stage protagonists. When did the upgrades have already followed the attacks of Astana and Europcar, the decisive attack was Tom Feklera for 8 kilometers to the finish line, one of the steepest climbs. His outburst caught Nikita and Eritrean Meron Russon, who actually made and the main contribution to the success of their final departure from the group. Everything was decided in the last 100 meters, when the road turned right and went into a small rise."
