59th Jayco Herald Sun Tour, 2.1 - 12th to 16th October 2011

Course Overview - from Official Site
The 59th Jayco Herald Sun Tour will navigate some of the most picturesque and at times challenging part of Victoria, visiting iconic tourist destinations such as the goldfields, Great Ocean Rd, Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington Peninsula and finishing in marvellous Melbourne.

Wednesday is the opening stage and a rolling course from Whittlesea to Ballarat will not only travel through the stunning central highlands and goldfields area but sap the legs with long rolling roads and likely strong winds at times. A fast finish into Ballarat will see the sprinters teams work hard to bring any breaks back for the dead flat sprinters finish at Lake Wendouree.

Thursday does not get any easier. The road from Ballarat to Geelong is full of surprises and the Brisbane ranges will test the riders before a long descent towards Geelong and the sea. The sprinters teams will again work hard but a technical run towards Geelong might favour the opportunist.

Friday sees the riders take on the stunning terrain of the Great Ocean Rd. An early climb and scorching descent to Lorne precedes a rolling and often windy ride back to Anglesea before heading into the Bellarine Peninsula and a gradual uphill run to the finish. We may see the strong man come to the fore today.

Saturday is the queen stage of the tour and the general classification will turn on its head today. A ferry ride from Queenscliff takes the riders to the start at Sorrento. A long flat ride along the beach to Dromana will warm up the riders before a first tough ascent of Arthurs Seat. 3k at 10% (actually 8%) makes a tough climb and with a yellow jersey to claim, the stakes are high. The riders will explore the stunning terrain of the Mornington Peninsula before 2 more times up the mountain with the 3rd time finishing on top. It is winner take all today and the climbers will come out to play.

Sunday brings the Tour home to Melbourne and Little Italy in Lygon St. A fast and furious circuit race may well decide the Tour as it did in 2006 when Simon Gerrans took the Tour on the final sprint of the final stage. A full day of support events and the bike expo are designed to make Lygon St a great cycling destination for the day.

Finding it hard to get a full list of riders for this, even a list of teams invited. is that it for Pro Tour teams, the rest Australian domestic?

Katusha is riding. This is the most pro conti/wt teams they have ever had. Generally a national team is entered for riders whose teams aren't entered for the race but they still want to ride.

EDIT: BMC isn't riding

Ah OK, I had been surprised seeing some of the teams coming as in the back of my head had thought it was more of a domestic race but put that down to a lack of knowledge on my behalf.

I was a little disappointed here. I was given a clipping of the council notices that said they were closing deviation road for the thursday stage with otherwise rolling closures. This had me thinking they might be finishing the at the top of that winding climby bit which not huge would make for interesting finish. But when I went to the website I saw they do another kilometre or two afterwards..

Shame really.

Ha this is great, 5 WorldTour teams (in 2012 ofc :p) to this race, best turnout for it ever? Surprised no Rabobank either with their focus on the Aussie market.

Will be good to see how well van Hoff matches up against these guys in the sprints. Genesys wont get to control everything now.

Will laugh hard if Kittel doesn't clean up in the sprints.
He will rape the opposition. Interested to see how Von Hoff with Genysys goes in this race after dominating the NRS.

Yeah he might learn how to ride smooth through a corner before a sprint. :D

It will be interesting to see how Von Hoff will go, and it's great that we have so many WT teams coming and the Pro Conti and Conti teams get to go toe to toe with them.

How will the local

The last couple of times this event ran Saxo Bank, then Sky, dragged the rest of the peloton (a couple of American teams, the rest Aussie continental) round Victoria.

Might be a very hard race for the local guns with half a dozen international teams here.

Supposably their will be 18 teams of 6 riders particpating. Many of the WT squads do have weaker lineups so hopefully the continental and domestic teams attack hard.

btw, I am updating the thread topic post with the team lineups when they come through.

I'll have to study the course but I'm going for Porte. Cam Meyor and Vicente Reynes might do something also.. who knows.
Budget Forklifts for the team Competition.

Without a tt, I don't see Porte doing much in the GC. Vincente Reynes looks good outsider for some of the tougher stages. Meyer seems to be a good bet and maybe Geniez could do something at Arthurs Seat.

I think Cooke will be a big threat in the sprints. Kittel will probably win all of them though. I wwonder if Von Hoff could beat either of them. I shall bet he can win at least one stage against them. Whatever happens he should go to Europe within another 2 years.

Will hopefully be down there on one of the hairpins on the day. Its a nice short punchy climb which should make a good explosive finish.

Some info on the climb for some of our o/s friends.
I would of liked to have gone down and watched but prior commitments have stopped me. :( Average Grade 8% is decent and they do the climb 3 times and finish on it. Should be a good stage and is televised live :)
