"A breakaway professional league"

so has the moment finally arrived?
would you support a brilliant, logical idea like this one?
will the dirty pigs and rat mcquaid finally be sent in hell??!!

things are moving fast:
you know that i was very disappointed when i didn't see any solidarity move from the riders in pellizotti's case.fear was still in the peloton.but things are getting better.pro cyclists want to be treated like they used to be(champs not junkies).

SANREMO. A white ribbon in solidarity with Pellizotti

The riders are ready to implement a gesture of solidarity in favor of Pellizotti, disqualified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne for two
years. U white ribbon on the shirt, or under the seat on the handlebars to say clearly and prominently that it is wrong. Many riders would be willing to lend its support (the action is deliberate and promoted dall'ACCPI) the rider of Friuli.

So the white ribbon is the new symbol of the omerta is it?

Well, it makes it easier to decide which riders to support or not.

Here I was looking at the title and I was all ready to give my list of riders that would be first round picks in the new "Breakaway Professional League".

Well since I'm here, I may as well list them:

Thomas Voeckler
Amets Txurka
Luis Leon Sanchez
Jens Voight
Jurgen Van Den Broucke

Well that's all I got right now.:D

McQuaid called the AIGCP's position an issue of "blackmail" because the teams did not get what they wanted and have no power to veto the decisions.

He also accused the AIGCP and Vaughters of "satisfying the desires of some of your members to create a breakaway professional league", and asked the organisation to give up its threat or its invitation to today's meeting.

No de Gendt, Riblon, Casar, Pineau, Hoogerland, Kiryienka, Machado, Rubén Pérez, Moncoutié or Pauriol?

Gives this a whole new meaning. :D

+1 that's what they should call the new league. Except the Italians are the bad guys in that movie, so it might not be the most fitting in order to support Pellizotti

That's what I thought too.

Pierrick Fedrigo has had a couple of memorable ones.

Thomas De Gendt would have had a bump recently.

If there is a breakaway (which I doubt), it will hinge on one team and one team only. And that team is Sky - without them all breakways are doomed.

I wonder if James Murdoch fancies being to cycling what Kerry Packer was to cricket. Think about UCI (and ASO etc).

At least McQuaid might take this statement and reflect why his job is in jeopardy.

As for a breakaway league it would be welcome if they actually intend to act on all of the initiatives the AIGCP offered. Otherwise we'll just have another WWF vs WWE situation with two rings for the clowns to dance in.

I'll say up front that I'm no fan of wrestling, but the demise of WWF was due to trademark problems with the real WWF (Wiorld Wildlife Fund) which made them to switch to WWE. There's no parallel here.

I appreciate you pointing out my ignorance on this detail. You get my point.

A rebel cycling league a la WSC would be a bit harder to pull off. Well, it all depends on the race organisers. If you get the ASO and RCS to defect then you more or less win. If they don't, it would be an uphill slog to try and win fans without having the names of the major races.

It would be an epic game though, a rebel league signs 80% of the top pros, but have no real races to run them in. The race organisers refuse to join, but then realise that their TV rights are worth nothing without the top pros. The UCI loses their revenue streams from the World Championships and the Olympics.

Maybe the teams and race organisers detest the UCI so much that they would be willing to take a risk if it meant hanging the UCI out to dry. There's no reason why the UCI couldn't be the leader in a "new model", but their communications and relationships with the teams and organisers would have to improve dramatically.

I can't believe I'm going to day this as not so long ago I was advocating a breakaway.... BUT... I think the radio saga has shown the teams cannot be trusted to put the interests of the sport ahead of their own selfish interests and so cannot be trusted to govern the sport among themselves.

Well, well, well...we finally agree! ;)
