Very very interesting article from Spanish sports newspaper MARCA. It might shed further light on the case for some of you ...

No time right now for me to translate it, but basically it details how AC's verdict could have been intentionally delayed to avoid his taking part in London's Olympics. Actually, it's just a matter of days. Food for thought ...

???

Absurd idea. AC would have had to be considered as an complete outsider for both the Olympic ITT (with the likes of Martin, Cancellara, Wiggins, Evans et al there) and the road race (even if the sprinters will not make the race, guys like Gilbert et al would still smoke AC on the road; in addition, he never won a considerable one-day-race in his whole career). The presence of AC in those two races would most likely have been completely irrelevant for the outcome of the race.

Could you give more details about the articles content? Unfortunately I don't speak Spanish...

Spain wouldn't have picked him anyway. He hasn't got much of a one day pedigree and never bothers with the Worlds.

Valverde, Sanchez, Sanchez, Rojas and Freire. Would do you drop?

The ban timeline was dictated by events 18 months ago, but various parties. Although some would have it the initial 'delay' in the UCI notifying AC, which triggered the whole chronology, was due to some strange conspiracy, I'm sure the Olympics were the last things on their mind at that point.

The Spanish coach did say that he counted on Valverde, Samu, Freire and Alberto for the Olympics and the Worlds.

Funny, considering he won't be serving 2 years as the period between January 25 and February 14 was counted twice (see that other thread here in the Clinic), meaning he should not only miss the Games but also the Vuelta.

Marca's reasoning is that the ban should have started on the date of his positive test at the Tour.

Indeed. Delays don't matter, 2 years from August stays the same.

I think it is just the media trying to drum up some sympathy for AC . In reality even if the ban were to end just before the olympics , he would not be in full race mode due to suspension . Training only, is a handicap to begin with. If anything the delay helped him continue to race and stay in top form so the left over time, (time left to serve ) is short and he can easily make a comeback for the remainder of season and next year .
POint number two , unless there are giant mountains in England , his chances for a one day event are less than favourable.
Olympics is only one part of a pro athletes carrear, it means more to the public and national pride, But no one can ever say that. So i will say it, if for no other reason. Pros need to worry about their job, that is paramount. AC is a very lucky man so far. Next step for him is not to be fined up the waazuu, i think that is more important right now. Good luck AC .

What?! I had completely missed this! How so? What's the reason behind that "logic"?

Yeah, we debated this for some time ago. It seems some people here still thinks he ban should start at the Tour, wich in totally insane if you ask me.

From the date he got informed (24th of August) to the 5th of August is never two years.

The thing is, the ban started at the 25th of January 2011, the date he got the one year ban proposal.

From the two years, they withdraw the time he was provisionally suspended, from the 24th of August 2010 to the 14th of February. So the period between the 25th of January and the 14th of February is counted twice.

The time difference between the 25th and the 14th is 20 days, and that is the the time the ban falls short of two years.

(All dates are approximate, so this isn't exact)

I never said anyone was biased. Just pointed out that Contador beat Evans in the olympic tt last time round so Evans does not deserve to be on a list of guys who would have definitely beaten Contador.

Why would they other? Whats the benefit?

Also quoting Marca on any sporting matter involving Spain isnt very objective. This is the paper that doctors photos to make Barca players look offside.
