Only very few of you know that last week I met the great man, Cadel evans. I was talking about my meeting with him to the Hitch and he suggested that I should make a thread about it so nobody should think that I am that self-centred or arrogant by making this thread.:D

Anyway, I walked down to Myer in Melbourne on Lonsdale street which is where the book area was, 45 minutes before the start. I saw the full shelf of cadel's book and picked one up and bought one. I still had 40 mins to kill. So I walked around and did some shopping for christmas. The wait for cadel to arrive felt like the longest 40 minutes of my life!

Finally, when in the CD section, I saw the great man arrive with his beautiful wife chiara. I stood there dumbfounded for about half a minute! i was literally short of breath. Luckily Cadel did not see me as that would have been a bit embarassing if he saw me starring at him in our first ever meeting.

I quickly walked over to the queue and people were running everywhere grabbing there copies of the book "Close to flying" to be signed. I quickly got in line taking as many photos as I could of Cadel. Chiara was waiting by the side watching her man.

As I got closer and closer my heart was pounding more and more. Finally, I step up to the desk.

ACF94: Hey, Cadel
Cadel: Hey, how are you going?
ACF94: Not bad, yourself?
Cadel: Not too bad
ACF94: (While Cadel is signing) Heard you had a fire at your place last night? (power pole was on fire)
Cadel: (Laughs) yeah, but everything is alright now. (Cadel hands back the book)
ACF94: thanks Cadel, hopefully next time you are in Australia you have a tdf trophy with you.
Cadel: Yeah me too. See you.

After I left the desk, I walked straight out of myer and off to Melbourne Central Station to catch the train home. Unfortunately I lost my train ticket so I had to buy a new one.:( But i was still very happy with what had occured.

Anyway, if you have any stories about riders who you have idolised and have finally got to meet or you would like to comment about my story then please post away. If not, then I hoped my story made you laugh (i am being for real about all this).

P.S. Here is an example of how i reacted after I met cadel, only joking :D

I'm not the type that gets obsessed over idols. When I was 11 I was standing just behind Indurain as he signed posters, I was right above his rear wheel, he was surrounded by kids trying to get his autograph, and I didn't make any effort to get it or to get him to acknowledge me in any way or even to get in front of him to get a clear look at his face. I was all "whatevs". I'm not sure how I ended up there, to be honest. I suspect I wanted to get a closer look at his bike.

My brother did get a signed poster though.

Does being laughed at by different Rabo riders count?
(multiple times out riding I see different Rabo riders based around here (quite a few RB3 riders, some of the protour team as well) riding as well, coming my way and laughing like I am an idiot ):p

11 in the era of Indurain. Your knowledge of the 90's cycling made me think you were older, but you say you were just a kid then.

This forum is younger than i thought.

Sorry about that! Yay for using trains though.

Anyways I've never talked to any pro riders personnally, just had a few encounters with the Luxembourgians:

- ran into Andy Schleck in a movie theatre
- was driving in front of Fränk Schleck (he isn't hard to spot, got a free car from VW but it has his name in big letters on it)
- came across Kim Kirchen and Jempy Drucker (Verandas Willems) while riding once
- had Jens Voigt walk by me after the prologue of the Tour de Luxembourg (he is much taller in real life)

Never really done the idol thing, People however famous are just people. We are fortunate to know some fairly well known people on the british folk and music scene who we just consider normal people and never fail to be amazed how some people react with the "oh my god you know xxx", and thinks its the most amazing thing in the world. People are just people. They eat, drink and crap just like the rest of us.

that said, glad you got to meet him. Was it everything you hoped it would be?

I cant trust my wife around riders anyway. Hitting G with a bag, getting kissed by countless ones, drolling over Malcolm Elliot, and gatecrashing the csc post tour party and completely confusing an already confused situation, shes a liability. :D

I went to a cycle show in London a few years ago. My mates said Merckx was going to be there so I took a copy of an International Cycle Sport book on the 1971 TdF with me just in case. On arriving at the venue I met a mate of mine, he said he'd been stalking Merckx trying to get an autograph, but with no luck. Minutes later this mate said `he's behind you', I turned round, blurted out `bonjour' and thrust the book towards him. Merckx gave me a bit of a cold look, took the book signed it and walked off. He looked fit and hard, not the sort of person you'd mess with.

About an hour later I bumped into Kelly on one of the stands. He was very friendly and chatty, and took my book and signed next to the autograph of Merckx.

I suppose this is what i would feel like if i met George Orwell , Tadeusz Komorowski, or Abraham Lincoln.

And ACF. You didnt have the balls to tell him you were the infamous ACF. These guys spend hours a day transfering from one place to another by coach. I know some of that time is devoted to <clinic> but, theres got to be at least one person on BMC who has stumbled on CN forums.

Your a liar, dim! With all those nudes of wigans around your bedroom, we all know you are dying to meet him!:D

It was everything I had hoped it to be but I guess it would of been nice to talk to cadel more and get to know him as a person. I have plenty of questions to ask him.

This forum was mentioned by a past forum poster to cadel of which cadel said he is not a fourm reader type of guy. I told him then that I always stuck up for him on the forum and didn't let anyone bully him.

Was all that in and around Mondorf? I read somewhere that those Schleck kids still spend an inordinate amount of time back there.

There's still something odd for me about seeing people in three dimensions. I see internationally recognised politicians all the time at work and they're almost always smaller than you'd think. :D

Andrei Tchmil once rode over my foot after a torrid edition of the perennially too-hard Leeds Classic.

So has he mentioned being on here off his twitter? (Suprised you've not taken my wigans bait)

Not directly but theres been the odd thing he said that matched issues here. He also started following around the time of a particularly meaty cn incident (i dont remember what, i just remember the time).

As for cadel, just because he doesnt come here (like brad), doesnt mean that his missus doesnt (I dont know that) but im sure a fair few riders keep an eye on the place.

After I left the desk, I walked straight out of myer...

I'm surprised that:

a) you didn't already have a copy of his book,
b) you weren't first in the line to get your book signed,
c) didn't ask for a photograph with him,
d) didn't shake his hand and say 'thanks'...

This guy is your idol, and you ask him about his electrical pole?

The cinema where I saw Andy is in Luxembourg City (the biggest in the country), and the time I drove in front of Fränk was actually in my village, a good friend of theirs lives there too.

It was a bit weird to see Andy at the movies, and I didn't talk to him or ask for an autograph either. I feel like I could do that when he is at a race, so it's part of his job, but since this was his free time I thought it best not to bother him

I haven't met any pro riders but back in 2001 there were no fansites for Thor Hushovd so I started what I believe is the first one (http://www.cyclingthor.cjb.net site no longer exists.) As part of setting up that site I was in contact with Hushovd over e-mail and did a short interview with him for the site.

I can't believe someone is that ecstatic over meeting one of the most dangerous people in the world.

Did you knock one out?

(......this is a wind up :p) What really happened.

Anyway, I walked down to Myer in Melbourne on Lonsdale street which is where the book area was, 45 minutes before the start. I saw the full shelf of Lance Comeback 2.0 and behind in the childrens section was cadel's book and picked up two - (a backup emergency copy in case the pages get too sticky on the original). I also got a new book I heard about called Harry Potter, I hope there is a series of them.

I still had 40 mins to kill - so I was able to read Cadels book 14 times,. After, I walked around and did some shopping for christmas and bought Cadel a Chris Comical performance book. The wait for cadel to arrive felt like the longest 40 minutes of my life - I was like being a UCI Chaperone but without the coffee!

Finally, when in the Michael Bolton CD section, I saw the great man arrive - yes, Santa! Behind was some cyclist with his beautiful wife chiara. I stood there dumbfounded for about half a minute, thinking - wow, Mum lied, Santa really does exist- i was literally short of breath. Luckily santa did not see me as that would have been a bit embarassing if he saw me starring at him in our first ever meeting.

But back to Cadel.
I quickly walked over to the queue, which consisted of me, Chiara and Molly and people were running everywhere grabbing their copies of the book, "Flying to Close to the ground" as cheap firewood.
I quickly got in line taking as many photos as I could of Cadel. Cadel looking up, Cadel looking down, Cadel looking up again, Cadel looking down again....
Chiara was waiting by the side watching her man, correcting his spelling mistakes. ("No honey, Cadel does not start with K")

As I got closer and closer my heart was pounding more and more. Finally, I step up to the desk.

ACF94: Hey, Cadel
Cadel: Hey, aren't you that guy ACF94?
ACF94: Am...No.
Cadel: Are you sure? Your T-shirt says "ACF94, Cadels biggest fan".
ACF94: No.... I am not me.
Cadel: (Laughs) Good, because of the Court order that guy is not allowed within 5 miles of me (Cadel hands back the book)..... and says "Hey, do you smell urine?"
ACF94: Am, ah, no... but thanks Cadel, hopefully next time you are in Australia you have a tdf trophy with you.
Cadel: Yeah me too. I like the Tour de Faso. See you.

After I left the desk, I walked straight out of myer and off to Melbourne Central Station to use their restroom and look at the photographs in Cadels great book, because of that I missed the train. Now I know how Cadel feels.
