Alright we're going in to the last week of the vuelta and it seems it's going to be Contador vs Purito. Still don't count out Valverde and Froome. They've a very strong team.

Anyway after almost 2 weeks the vuelta, who will win the vuelta?

I say Contador.

The real mountains start now, we'll get stages with 4 mountains in 1 stage. The harder the better for him. He keeps getting better, that's obviously visible and he's just the best climber in the world.

Purito is strong and he showed consistency in the giro but Alberto is on a different level than those of the giro.

Hope Gesink makes you look bad for not including him. ;)

1. Rodriguez
2. Contador
3. Gesink

I was going to do put option 5 in it 'other'. But that's something you do at the beginning of the vuelta. It's obvious it's one of those 4. Don't think anyone will question that.

Contador is on course ftw, though I'm still hoping Rodriguez will take it.

Why are Valverde and Froome included here? They both rode the whole Tour, and they're looking tired out.
This thread is about winning this Vuelta, not who'll get the podium spots.

Funny thing, i remember this poll at the same time last year (in fact we were well in the mountains by then).

something like 60% said Nibali and 30% said Wiggins.

Few went for Froome and Cobo.

True that.
It's Nibali's to lose was the most read comment of those days.

And yet even you dont think he can win
I think he can win, but I can only choose the one who's most likely to win. ;)

Obviously, I questioned it. The rationale is, if you put Froome and Valverde, Gesink must be there as well, as he's improving and the big mountains suits his riding.

Froome wil fade I think

make that +2

anyone able to quickly link the poll from last year? I probably, in fact I'm sure I was, in the Nibali's to lose camp. Wasn't the last week last year mostly flat stages other than maybe Angrilu somewhere in the middle of the week at best?

I checked a few days ago the results of the ITT last year and found that Cobo was more than 1:30 down on GC then. That's a bit more than what Purito has on Froome, so if you want to see a better Vuelta than last year pray for Gesink to win :D

Angliru and Pena Cabarga.

Take a look by yourself: http://www.cicloweb.it/analisi_percorso/vuelta-a-espana-2011.html

I can't find words to describe how poorly designed that third week was. Angliru was actually at the end of second week.

I do think Contador will pull back Purito once we hit the toughest mountain stages and he will win this Vuelta. That said, I don't think Purito can be written off completely and I don't think Contador will win easily or by a large margin. Contador's yet to show any stupendous level of form and if Purito can handle the high mountains the way he did in the Giro, it'll at least be interesting...

I don't know. On one hand, Purito has never been a consistent climber before the Giro whereas Contador obv is not on the level of his best patterns. Contador can get stronger, but will that be enough to beat Purito? And at last why the man in form of his life can not withstand agaist this Contador? I wouldn't totally rely on criteria of palmares. Nonetheless, voted for the Froome just cos I don't like to be like majority.
