Alberto Bettiol is the new classics contender thread

His results since winning the NC:

DNF Tour de France (fatigue)
18th Olympics ITT
23th Olympics RR
10th Renewi Tour
20th GP Quebec
DNF GP Montreal

He's lucky Italy lacks options for the WC road race.

I'll let him off a bit due to him having just moved teams, but his recent results should of course affect the role and freedom he will have during the WC. Still, he's had one of his more consistent seasons this year, so even if there had been depth among the Italians, he'd probably still be selected.

According to a few sources Bettiol told Bennati not to select him. Lack of shape.

Wow, Astana pays extra to get Bettiol for the fall, hoping he can secure some points to avoid relegation, and he’s not fit to race. Bad luck for Vino’s boys.
For Bettiol’s sake, I hope he can find some shape and race well in the short time left this season, but the WT would be a better place without Astana.

I was expecting him to be .1 .Pro UCI points machine to close out the year.

Will it be better with a Chinese team next year? They'll need a good season to be there the year after.
