Really think it is about time the UCI and Pat had a Official thread. maybe they do I could not find it.

Anyway ...........

Countries set to lose doping powers

CYCLING'S world body wants national federations stripped of the power to investigate doping cases concerning their own riders by setting up an independent tribunal, believing it will limit time being wasted in the current process and the potential danger of local bias impairing their findings.
Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) president Pat McQuaid revealed the initiative during the world road cycling championships on Saturday when questioned about the ongoing doping case of Alberto Contador.

Which I think is a positive step forward, the only concern is that the independent tribunal must be independent of the UCI as well.

ps can a mod please put in a ´and´ after UCI ie "another interesting piece I found on the UCI and president Pat McQuaid " Thread

Thanks

Well done prat mcquaid - how many years did it take to work that out, at this rate we may even get an acknowledgement from prat that Armstrong may be being investigated for doping by the us Feds as well

same as in the other thread, the current rules are totally unrelated to reality and mirror nobody's business model. If a pro player on Man U violates a rule he is dealt w by his club and the federation. He doesn't go back to his home country.

The UCI needs to let pro racing exist on it's own. If bike gymnastics and BMX need to be governed go ahead but leave the pros out of it. The backward 50 year old systems of the UCI are killing pro racing. The big race promoters have McQuaid by the short hairs. No true schedule, no consistent testing, everything about the product varies from year to year, by month, promoter and political climate. People want to see the best racers contest the best races, the UCI is probably the single biggest obstacle to that happening.

The silly association of a professional league associated with regional rules from the athlete's country of license is dumb. The problems it would create for any type of police are mind boggling. Which side of the road to drive on ?. In Spain a banned substance can often be accepted if you are the favored son. In Italy time is calculated by a different calender and two years is not always 2 years. The UCI is completely unneeded in pro racing, a strong organization absolutely, but not anything to do McQuaid and his circle of DB's.

Do you trust the UCI under Pat McQuaid to be anymore serious about doping issues than say the Spanish federation?

Until the whole disciplinary issue is separate from the people running the sport (and gaining financially from it) there is little hope for the sport.

Well if the bio-passport committee is anything to do by then this will be a raging success! This would only give McQuaid more power to select who tests positive and who becomes a border line case that’s not released to the media.

Who are these fabled promoters that have more power than the UCI? We've got ASO (France), RCS (Italy), Spain???, and Pat's own promotion company. The rest go to Pat to buy the show off the shelf.

Last time I looked, ASO has been crippled by Pat. Pat aggressively promotes the Tour of California over the Giro. The UCI is consolidating power and money at the Pro Tour level in the name of growing the sport Internationally.

Is it working? I don't know.

Winner! Winner!

Full-on positives can be kept out of the media too. Worst case scenario for a positive in this regime is the UCI recommends a 'vacation' for the rider.

I suggest full on positives will be 'compensated' for rather than enforced vacations.

But the UCI is leaving out the important factor in trying to control doping in house and that is the police authorities and various drug agencies of countries who take a very dim view of illegal pushing of pharmaceuticals and that will bite the sport bigger than anything as that bypasses sports journalists and into crime reporting. Illegal trade in pharmaceuticals means bypassing taxes and governments frown on that hugely.

And the Italian police are doing a good job of policing the illegal trade in pharmaceuticals compared to the various federations finding positive athletes.

Poor McQuaid really is a stupid.......

Stupid, we shakes our heads over and walk away.

True, but it is easy to incompetent and stupid when the people who should question these things are complicit.

I think if he was evil he wouldn't bumble along. The UCI's current hierarchy would be gone in a second if only the federations and media called it truthfully.

They're pushing it for sure.
As they take it this far, a neurologist could step forward and declare him unfit to perform any intelligent work. Bush Jr. nearly got that far, and then just quickly uttered something appropriate when the men in white coats approached too much for comfort.

Wouldn't that be great, and independent panel of neurologists (or psychiatrists when relevant) to signal by themselves leaders unfit to perform this job. It would force leaders to act responsibly, and consistent with their organizations' mission statements. It's not THAT hard you know, to do your job. Just when you're up high, messing up seems to get you re-elected every time.

I doubt the neurologists would form such a panel as they would lose all their valuable funding.

I think most countries suffer from this with their governments, but they, well mostly, are elected by the people. In McQuaid's case he is elected by the national Federations, which is worrying for amateur cyclists when you consider how badly the International Fed is run.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/uci-vs-landis-the-missing-lawsuit

With this sort of rhetoric Pat still hasn't changed. Well done for cyclingnews for asking the question. Not many other cycling news organisations who would do that.
__

“It’s definitely going ahead but I don’t know when. I haven’t spoken to legal but they’re looking after it. You can’t dictate resolutions on legal cases. They go at their own speed and you have to let the lawyers take care of it.”

Cyclingnews contacted Landis and asked if he had received any notification or communication from the UCI since they announced the start of legal proceedings. Like McQuaid, he had no idea where the case was heading but he did disclose that he had received no communication.

More importantly, he told Cyclingnews that he had hired his own US lawyers – real ones this time – to trawl the Swiss courts to find a case that matched his name. According to Landis, nothing was found.

“They put out a press release on their website saying they had filed a law suit. That was months ago and they can’t pretend that didn’t happen. I had lawyers search the courts of Switzerland for something with my name on it and there is nothing,” Landis said. “So McQuaid is full of it.”

Props to CN for asking.
And good to hear something from our new favorite Nascar hopeful.

You’d think McQuaid would say something like “For now there is no law suit. Cycling has moved on, the UCI has moved on we’re now part of new generation of cycling . The UCI and cycling doesn’t need to waste time with Floyd Landis. Let’s talk about the programs we’re putting in place and some of the excellent results from new younger riders at the world championships”

But instead he continues to put his foot in it and pretend there’s still something in the law suit. He’d be better off acknowledging that there isn’t a lawsuit and move on. But pretending that Floyd is lying when the whole world knows he’s not is just really stupid. It just prolongs the pain.

Apparently Pat threatened teams with suspension of their ProTour license should the teams not attend Pat's Tour of China.

Lower down the UCI, a spokesperson denies the UCI would do such a thing. The UCI might not have, but the head of Global Cycling Promotions used his role as UCI chief to enrich himself via GCP.

No he went over the teams heads and threatend the sponsors.Another awesome long term move by Pat, strongarm the people who put money INTO the sport at a time teams are struggling for sponsorship.

Edit, my reading of it was he wrote too the sponsors informing them he would be talking about the possible boycott with the chinese gov and would it be in sponsors best interests etc doing business in market of 1.3 billion etc

Yes, he did that too. You missed the part where he threatened the teams with revocation of their license.

"the team sponsor that failing to appear at the start line in Beijing would result in a summons from the UCI Licence Commission, wherein the team could lose their race licence and the benefits associated with it. The UCI’s position, McQuaid states, is that the team is, in fact, obligated to attend the Tour of Beijing under the conditions of the race licence."

So much for the benign "GCP is a race organizer just like everyone else" quote by Alain.
